favored world to game on

Post by garhkal »

So, when you use established game realms to game on, which is your fave?

Greyhawk?
DL
or FR??

For me, its FR, pre-gods war. (time of troubles)

Can you count the Outdoor Survival map + Wayne Rossi's OD&D Setting posts as an established game setting, If yes, then that.

Otherwise it's the pre-Mentzer "Known World" of B/X.

Greyhawk
I want to hear what you did in the dungeon, not the voting booth. Politics and rules minutia both bore me in my opinion.

Since this is in General, I'm going with Glorantha, and now more recently, Aearth.

As a kid, early-1990s BECMI Mystara followed by Forgotten Realms (Faerun) and Dark Sun (Athas).

Now...ummm...I enjoy playing with particular DMs more than particular worlds/settings. Maybe Greyhawk? I like lots of stuff about Chainsaw's take on Hyperborea's Khromarium, AustinJimm's homebrewed Planet Eris, grodog's take on Castle Greyhawk, and the pre-Frog God Mythrus Tower...but those aren't really game "worlds", per se.

I tried running Greyhawk-based games but never felt confident I had a solid handle on the politics and mythology to make it feel "real".

My home game with my kids and thier friends is on hiatus for a few months but I'm now trying pre-Mentzer Known World. I'm not really happy with that, though. It's too thin and requires too much DIY, which I don't the time, energy, or creativity to remedy.

Aren't DL & FR the same thing?

That's how much I know about those. Of what's listed, none of the above. I did use modified Greyhawk for a couple years about 30 years ago.

Today, if I had to use someone else's established world, it might be Arklyrell, Wilderlands, or Hyperborea. A core part of DMing (IMO) is creating the world your campaign is based in, but that's just me I guess. I still use Outdoor Survival from time to time. It's known as the Wild Lands of Oros in my Planet Eris game.

Homebrew world is Black Sabbath. Greyhawk is Rush. Forgotten Realms is Britney Spears. Dragonlance is Tiffany. ;)

The World of Greyhawk is the only pre-made D&D world that’s at all appealing to me. I use it in conjunction with Gary Gygax’s AD&D multiverse. I like that it gives all the macro-scale detail but generally leaves all the small-scale detail to the individual DM, providing something like the best of both worlds. In the post-Gary era they did their best to undermine that freedom and to turn it into another Forgotten Realms where everything is exhaustively detailed, but I ignore all of that shit.
