I bought my cousin Wayne a case of Mad Elf for Veterans' Day a couple years back, when Troegs was still brewing out of Harrisburg instead of Hershey. The poor guy'd been living out of a motel room for the last 10 years, while directing most of his combat-disabled pay from losing a leg in Vietnam to pay for his 90+ year old mom (my grandma's sister) to continue living independently instead of being shuffled off to a county home.

He said it was the best beer anyone ever bought him a case of, but the first time he'd drunk three before he realized what it was all about, and ended up spinning his wheelchair around in circles in his room singing old college fight songs from the 60s.

They claim 75. It appears about that.

Excellent. There's nothing like that by me, sad to say.

Yeah everyone I know in CA was saying "Ooo Denver is going to be a cold place, be prepared!". I had to gently remind them that I live in Wisconsin...

Brought some of this back home. "It's like a campfire in a can"!

The Grand Kirin winter brew. A mighty 7.5% and not too bad tastewise.

Having a hard root beer float with "Best Damn Root Beer" and vanilla ice cream.

I tried the "best damn" without the ice cream, first, but I can't say I'm super impressed. It's a little more beery than the Not Your Fathers, while still very sweet and vanilla/wintergreen dominated. I know that sounds like what you should expect in a root beer, but the finish is off, to me. With the ice cream, as a float, it's better, but the weird finish is still there. I'm on the fence, but leaning towards "eh, I don't really like this."

By itself, I'd say not as good as Not Your Fathers. With ice cream, it's a little closer, but I still give the nod to Not Your Fathers. Either way, I don't think of these as something to drink more than one of. It's more like a dessert than anything else.

The brew pub near my parents in Oak Harbor WA has an aviation and Navy theme. The sampler comes in an aircraft carrier holder (and the beers were outstanding).
