Hmm... I don't think Joss did/does, but some of his writers on either Buffy or Angel definitely did. On some Traveller boards, members are positively convinced that Joss was familiar with CT. Since I only saw 1 ep of Firefly and have never seen Serenity, I can't say for sure.

The Manson thing I believe is just an urban legend. AFAIK, Manson himself has been kept in solitary confinement (think Hannibal Lector here) and not allowed to socialize because of his reputation as a high charisma corruptor (which makes sense to me). He does (or did) correspond through the mail with people, but I'm assuming his mail is very carefully scrutinized by prison officials. Similarly, some convicted members of the Family have been denied parole specifically because they refused to agree to never contact Charlie if released. All of this seems to imply that he would never be allowed to sit around playing tiddly-winks with other inmates, let alone D&D.

OTOH, IIRC - the Family often engaged in what we might call LARPing nowadays. Visitors to their farm were utterly confused whenever they were playing out one of their psychodramas.

My wife commented that Geddy Lee references D&D in the RUSH song roll the bones, is he another one for the list.

I've heard tell that a lot of correctional institutions forbid D&D for many reasons, not the least of which is that hardback book covers = shivs (all the more reason to play red-box Moldvay basic, I reckon!) but additionally because it's trafficking and gang power related: to-wit, players do things in game that put them in position to be owed or owe real-life favors to one another, and there is a "master" of the game who can dictate actions to others.

How this differs from playing spades or chess or whatever is beyond me, other than the DM aspect of it.
