Knights & Knaves Alehouse

We play at dining room tables, and I write create drawings, dungeons, maps etc. in notebooks or on a clipboard. I usually write modules with a mechanical pencil in outline form, and then flush it out on Word (as my writings pretty bad).

Before the latest baby was born, we played at my place on 4 34"x34" folding card tables put together in a big square. I cut a sheet of 3/8" plywood down to 36x42" and screwed in 8 4" couch legs to the bottom. it sits in the middle of the table, with the grid mat on top of it. Players can slide their PHBs, clipboards, extra dice, etc underneath the platform and have room for the charsheets, snacks, and a beverage. If there is a spill, the mat and minis are up and out of the way. We really enjoy the map/minis being up off the table and little more in our face.

Currently, we play at my friend's on his much smaller dining room table. We currently use a Flip-Mat from SteelSqwire and the Firery Dragon counters. After the first of the year, we'll be moving back to my place.

I work all over the place on game prep: laptop, desktops at home and work, and in a notebook. All electronic files get transferred to a linux server I operate at work, and mirrored to a PC at home. I only use the one notebook (well, I'm on my 3rd) for pen'n'paper development.

Holy Shimoley! That's a great idea! With our new our house, I'm currently putting together my dedicated game room. I'm now going to incorporate something like this!

now i feel terrible as i wanted to write "living-room".

I rent a conference room...$36 buckas an event ..for 4 hours..
we play 1 x per month..so its affordable..
has room for 10 comfortably...climate controled private conference room with chars and a conference table... clean restrooms on the same floor..
smoking terrace (if needed)


its neutral territory..and walking distance to some eateries/pubs

we just bring our gear...
sometimes i bring a nice snack...

all above board...no fear of getting kicked out..
and its plenty cheap at most universities and libraries..let alone community centers....

and in the scheme of things...$36 is not alot to spend for something enjoyable...
some of us spend that much on watered down drinks in a few hours time..

We gamed once in the community room of a player's apartment complex; I don't know if it cost him anything (probably - it was a nice room).

The bathroom . . . that way we don't have to stop gaming for potty breaks.

The coolest place I've ever played AD&D? The upstairs lobby of the Ritz Carlton (I think that was the hotel) in downtown Chicago. It was a large elegant room decorated in black and red, with very little lighting; decorated with black high backed leather chairs that curved in around you (not unlike the chair No. 2 sits in on the Prisoner) with small black marble tables. We were the only ones in this huge room and the place had a bar downstairs open 24 hours. It was cool because the downstairs was crowded and had a live band playing cool jazz music (I know but this actually was cool stuff) and the upstairs (where we were) looked down on it (there was an atrium floor about 30x60 above the main bar below. So, we had great music, drinks, a party going on (that we could see but they couldn' t see us, food and plenty of time to game. A perfect setting in a way.

I've always tended to game at the dining room table. it may be mundane but I sure have had a lot of fun game session there. Some day I dream about having my own library/office/game room. It's probably a pipe dream, but hey, it's good to have goals, heh.
