Moneyball and Black Hawk Down: both great books that were made into very good movies!
Black Hawk Down is a very anti-american book. The movie is very pro-american.

We watched the first two eps of the anime _Evangelion_ tonight (over dinner, me, Heather, and Ethan). It was OK, but E says is takes a few eps to get off the ground; we’ll see....

It has a great beginning arc, then a lot of filler, then it picks up again and gets really weird. Watching it on late night TV (in German!) made quite an impression when I saw it in the 1990s ("Cartoons can go there and do that?"), although those were more innocent times. Still, one of the few animes I truly enjoy, while I generally find them utterly uninteresting. It has a message that comes from Hideaki Anno's struggles with depression, and has a fairly positive message about standing up for yourself. Interestingly, he seems to have worked through his issues with this series, and absent his demons, everything he has done ever since has been happily mediocre. (Okay, his Godzilla is pretty decent.)

A bunch of guys who are better than your average joe set out into the middle of nowhere where they murder and kill everything they come across in order to stockpile gold and elaborate magical bling. There are no taxes, no state and any poor people that get in your way get their village burned to the ground. It's like Ayn Rand on PCP." - Mr. Analytical

I read the book shortly after it came out. I do not remember it being particularly anti-American. But it was quite a while ago that I read that book. It came out in like '99.

The author of that book did come under fire a few years later for doing some questionable things in writing some articles about a court case he was following. He was alleged to have not actually conducted any of his interviews (and just made up all the quotes). Jounalists......does anyone really wonder why no one reads newspapers or magazines any more?

The movie version was decent enough. Plenty of action. Many recognizable actors.

The Dig on Netflix is a nice relaxing movie. Likeable characters abound. I think the Hollywoodization of the real story is minimal for the course.

I watched that tonight after playing D&D with my group. I actually started another movie on Netflix first called the "London Heist" but it was so frigging awful that I deleted it from my play list and then tried The Dig. The Dig was compelling enough for me to watch the entire film. Ralph Fiennes was the only actor that I recognized. It was a different kind of role for him than I have seen in other films.

The last episode of The Expanse S5 dropped, and what happened, happened. And, I did *not* see that coming. :(

Really major book & show spoiler:
They killed Alex! Those bastards! He's still very much alive well past this point in the books.

Started watching The Witcher. I found it unengaging and turned it off part way through the first episode.

Maybe I'll give it another chance some other evening, but probably not.

I watched the series a while back. It was kind of strange bouncing back and forth in time in the story line. I never played the game it is based on so I found this highly confusing. I wouldn't say that the series is great or anything but I did manage to watch all of it. This is saying something considering how many netflix products that I turn off in the first 15 minutes.

The series grew on me as it went along. Actually watched it twice, so that the second time around I could grok the time splices. I wound up enjoying it enough to start reading the books. Never played the game.

Yeah, wasn't expecting that...and the way it was handled was very poor. I think it's likely they'll keep the guy (from Earth) that was piloting the Rocinante in the last couple of episodes, even though I got the vibe that he was going to sabotage their mission [you'd have a good idea whether or not that was going to happen, having read the books.]

From what I can tell Cas Anvar's career is probably over...he got Kevin Spacey-ed [or, he got "spaced".] Allegations were made last summer (after shooting had wrapped) that he had been getting gropey with young staffers and underage fan girls at some conventions. The production company dropped him like a hot potato. A shame, as he seemed like a pretty good actor [despite the character he was playing being a bit over the top.]
