To what are you listening?

You can talk about "almost" anything here.

Listening to more Split Lip Rayfield, partly because that damn Deck of Many Things song is stuck in my head.

Well, this happened:

Shout out to Gary Gygax

The song's name is "The High Price of Necromancy"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMh6uZr ... .be&t=4634

Also, I think they are our kind of gamers form the "official" Deck of Many Things video. We all know what page of the DMG is opened to.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTZWl6fPN-E

Also, I kind of suspected the banjo player was the DM.

BTW - I listened to the first two CDs by The Sword last week. Music was great, lyrics were OK, vocals were so-so (but got better from first to second disc...they were too far out in front earlier). Does it get any better?
I thought they were worse in the third album (and never bought the fourth), but that's because I didn't like the changes, so you might prefer the newer stuff. I also liked the lyrics!
fingolwyn wrote:Also, I've seen that Sleep is recommended, but I only know them as the group that opened for Nik Turner's Hawkwind a long time ago who played so long that Nikwind barely got any time on the stage before the club owner cut the power. How are they relative to the first Witchcraft album, the other Witchcraft albums, and the first two by The Sword?
Sleep's super heavy doom/stoner (at least Dopesmoker, my favorite), whereas Witchcraft feels like very folksy metal to me (at least the first album, the one I have) and I see The Sword's first two albums as more traditional heavy metal. I don't really know much about music though. I feel like rogatny, Dungeondork or Philotomy might help more here.
I don’t know Witchcraft well. They’re a Swedish classic rock-sounding band that often gets compared to Graveyard.

Sleep is a legendary Doom Metal band. Absolutely cult-like following. Their songs are very long, slow and exceedingly heavy with lyrics about marijuana. They might come off as a parody if they weren’t so entirely and obviously committed to the form and absolutely amazing musicians. They only have four albums in the 30 years they’ve been around, but the last 3, Holy Mountain, Dopesmoker, and The Sciences are all deemed classics. I’d say The Sciences, their most recent is probably the most accessible to the first time listener. “Accessible” here being a relative term.

When Sleep is more often than not broken up, they split into two bands. High on Fire is the more metal, clearly Motörhead-inspired band that in my eyes can do no wrong. It may be blasphemous to say, but I like them more than Sleep. They’re extremely consistent and I don’t think they’ve made a bad album, but my favorite is Snakes for the Divine.

Om is the other half of Sleep. They’ve been inactive for awhile and I’m not as familiar with them as HoF. They’re a drone/avant-garde band with heavily religious/mystical lyrics somewhat similar to Earth or Sunn O))) although much more melodic than the latter. I’ve only heard their Advaitic Songs album and think it’s phenomenal.

The Sword is a more traditional metal band. I think they weren’t taken very seriously by the metal community when they first came out because they were from hippie-land Austin and signed to a major label without “paying the dues.” But they’ve been around for a while now and have been very consistent, building up a solid following. They’ve gotten a little more proggy/classic rock with each release. I lost track of them a couple albums ago and so can’t really comment on their most recent music. I think their first album is still my favorite of the ones I’ve heard.

I have recently discovered a band by the name of Umphrey's McGee. (Thanks oddly enough to Huey Lewis talking about them) Fantastic Band. this album in particular is quite amazing

Those post-Dio Sabbath albums were viciously dismissed by both critics and fans of the day, and it was completely unjustified. Frankly, I suspect it had as much to do with people finally being sick of Don Arden’s shit as it did with the actual music.

Still, I still think that had Tony called it something like The Tony Iommi Band, Seventh Star, Eternal Idol, Headless Cross, and Tyr would all be considered classics. Especially Headless Cross, which has slowly earned some critical re-evaluation in recent years.

My eight-year old just told me his favorite song is Master of Puppets. My wife's so happy!

Try deleting the "s" after http, and "&list..." and anything after.
