Re: What are you reading?
Rereading some David Drake and halfway through Swann's the Not-World. Most of Swann's books are really long novella's so generally quick reads. I have a stack of them and have only read 2 or 3. So far the Not-World is amusing and better than expected.

Re: What Are You Watching?
Watched The Pony Express with Charlton Heston and Forest Tucker, it is dated and wasn't a great movie even when it wasn't. Watched The Veil with Jessica Alba, Lilly Rabe and Thomas Jane with a bad fake nose. Started out well, but the writing petered out and the ending was blah. Watched part of The R...

Re: [Star Wars] Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker
I hesitate to mention it because it brings to mind Gamergate and conspiracy theories, but it’s a matter of fact that Rian Johnson is married to a prominent film critic ( Karina Longworth ) and both of them are very well-known and popular in the tight-knit film-critic community, especially the “new ...

It does make me feel more hopeful that you like TLJ and dislike Skywalker.Flambeaux wrote:From this, I infer I'm not a real Star Wars fan.

Re: What Are You Watching?
Just finished watching Takashi Miike's 13 Assassins. Its a bit of a homage to 7 Samurai and is very good most of the way through. The ending turns into something of a Samurai fantasy, which I found disappointing as the beginning of the movie is not, and I can only see a few places before the end tha...

Re: WTB - Tome of Adventure Design - Hardback
This started me rereading my copy. Those first naming charts can be hilarious. Reminded me of that boardgame Small Kingdoms?

Started Levianthan Wakes by Corey. Finished Little Fuzzy and Cosmic Computer by Piper, Prince of Mercenaries By Pournelle, With the Lightnings by Drake and A Civil Campaign by Bujold (Her writing seemed to collapse after that in '99 and I've varied between disappointed to appalled by her later work....

Re: [Star Wars] Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker
To me it’s easiest to just have decided that Star Wars died in 1999. Everything up until The Phantom Menace was pure awesome. The only thing post-1999 that I like is The Force Awakens, which seemed like an honest-to-goodness throwback to that pre-1999 hobby. This new movie will probably be enjoyabl...

Re: [Star Wars] Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker
Broke down and saw it. Most people here know what a grognard I am... or an asshole... either way. I went in with low expectations. I was pleasantly surprised. This was a grand ending to the entire Skywalker Saga, and a fitting one. Everyone shined. The SFX were excellent. The acting was superb. Fin...

Re: [Star Wars] Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker
One of the most biting reviews Ive read concluded that we now owe Lucas an apology for the prequels as at least he tried. Id be waiting for it on kindle anyway as theaters and my wheelchair dont mix well. I dont think this is a generational thing. I think a bad movie is a bad movie.

Re: [Star Wars] Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker
I've got tickets to see this on Monday the 23rd but am not at all excited about or even looking forward to it. It feels kind of like a vaguely-unpleasant obligation, like having a holiday dinner with a bunch of relatives you don't really like. I don't care at all about any of the new characters, do...

Re: [Star Wars] Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker
I can't tell anything by these reviews. Most of these reviewers don't reflect my taste so if they say its a hum-drum or bad movie that might be correct or it might be a positive for me. From the past movies I have low expectations, but I've been enjoying the Mandalorian so it seems like someone at D...

Re: What Are You Watching?
We watched The Last Jedi tonight. So many good story possibilities squandered across both films, but we still enjoyed the rewatch. I'm curious to see where they go with things from here, since there so much got wrapped up with The Last Jedi. I don't know if you are doing Disney+ but the Mandalorian...

Re: What Are You Watching?
I've not been able to get our boys into B5 yet, but the slow-burn first season may be the issue there, perhaps. We watched Star Wars: The Force Awakens tonight for family movie night. We'll do The Last Jedi, and perhaps Solo and Rogue One before the new one releases, which we're taking Heather's fa...
