Half-Price Books

Post by Philotomy Jurament »

I'm at HalfPrice Books. Big rpg section with nothing good. It's full of 2e, 3e, and white wolf. And the odd gurps book. They do have a field of glory rulebook (probably someone getting ready for the forthcoming 2e).

Yeah, occasionally I’ll find something cool, but usually it’s a heap of junk like you mentioned, plus possibly a Fiend Folio or Survival Guide.

Most of the goodies I find there are old paperbacks, like Burroughs, or the Gord series, or The Worm Ouroboros.

I've found some decent adventures there every now and then. Picked up my Unearthed Arcana there for $7.
Just doesn't have a good selection often enough to be worth it.

I still kick myself about this... two years ago I saw Supplements III and IV there in great shape, in plastic bags, for next to nothing. If only I had had the presence of mind to pick them up immediately. Told myself I'd wait a couple days, check values online... yeah, they were gone when I went back two days later.

Recently picked up all the Steve Jackson's Sorcery books for my nephew.

He loved them.
The DUNGEON MASTERS GUIDE City of Brass cover is good and bad at the same time. While its very representational of a high level adventure, it sends a clear message to the dumb: Satan is going to cornhole Miss USA with a big red member and theres nothing science or the military can do about it. - Gene Weigel

There are no Half-Price Books stores in SoCal which makes me sad because I used to love love love their stores in Indianapolis. I never bought much (any?) game-stuff there, but I bought so many other books that even ~15 years later I still have more than a few unread books on my shelves with HPB pricetags on them :)

The Heroic Legendarium - my book of 1E-compatible rules expansions and modifications, now available for sale at DriveThruRPG

You have to keep you're eyes out. I'm in my Half-Price at least once a week doing a delivery, so I check the shelf often.

My most recent purchase: last Thursday, a 5th ed. set of the LBBs (no box, however!).

I saw a C&C Players Handbook there. There was some Rifts stuff, too.

I love HPB. Got The War of the Worlds DVD there last week. I have come across a few old-school gems there from time-to-time.

Apparently there are no locations in Missouri. (Kansas City doesn't really count.)
I've heard some big 'fishing' yarns from gamers about their catches at such stores. The accounts get more incredible by the day.

Having personally caught some of those fish and witnessed the catching of others, I can attest to the truth of at least some of the tales. :)

That's great! 8) It's fun to hear those tales, no matter how outlandish they may seem.
As far as I know there are no bookstores in this entire county. I sense a conspiracy afoot! :x

No HPBs here in FL, likely none ever not in this economy.

(Best I've ever done was a true 1st DMG and true 1st Monster Manual both at a now closed used bookstore).
