Exile on Main Street may just be the most overrated (to me) album I've ever heard. Frankly, I think it sucks. Tumbling Dice is an okay song, and the only listenable one on a double album. Bleh. Compare to any of their 60s albums. And yet it is held up for some reason as this lofty pinnacle of their career. I can't figure it out.

As I discovered after e-mailing with Gygax, the key to understanding 1e initiative is that each side is actually rolling when the other side will act in the 10 segment sequence. I figured this out after Gygax told me he played now by rolling a 1d10 with the low roll going first. After this I took a second look at the spell casting times and realized that casting times fit in perfectly when one used initiative correctly. A very cool and efficient system which was disastrously explained.
Um, exactly my point - you should be rolling for yourself, not for the "other side" (which implies only one other side), and using lowest goes first. I prefer the original d6 to a d10 for many reasons, but either works.

I just... I just... I think I'll get over this, but I have to lay down.

But seriously. Give it another listen or two. I can't imagine a real Stones fan disliking Exile. Personally, it's my favorite album of all time.

It's one of the best ten albums of all time, hands down. Rocks Off/Rip This Joint/Shake Your Hips might be the best 1-2-3 opening punch on an album ever. Dont' forget Sweet Black Angel, and from the new release bonus disc Plundered My Soul. I must have listened to this one 1000 times and it never gets old.

Yeah, it's been over a decade since I popped it in, so I guess I'll give it another listen. But after getting into the Stones and really getting into Aftermath, Between the Buttons, Beggars Banquet, Their Satanic Majesties Request, Let it Bleed and Sticky Fingers, I had heard so many good things about Exile that it was such a big let down.

But it's your favorite album of all time? Wow! Zepp IV is mine.

Ken - to really appreciate EoMS you've got to listen to it repeatedly for a 5-day binge. It makes a whole lot of sense when you get back to the hotel at 4AM, smoking a jay on the bed with 2 hookers you just met. A LOT of sense.

Thanks for posting those, rogatny. That made my night. I haven't heard those in forever, and they hit the spot. 8)

The only argument that Exile is over-rated that I'd entertain for the merest moment is the fact that they'd already made Let It Bleed. Then I'd shake the shit off my shoes and do the hip shake.

This might be what the actual covers will look like:

If they actually did look like that -- or even close to it -- I'd be ecstatic. I'm still incredibly impressed that WotC even thought of reprinting AD&D, let alone that they're doing it. If their "new" covers are really just reworkings of the original ones so as to make them distinct from the originals, I'd be more than cool with that.

Hehe... I'd be curious to see clear images of the covers (I'd likely have to check out first hand unfortunately). I wonder if they scanned a clean copy of the original books and photoshopped bits out because they didn't have original layouts. A good look at the covers might reveal the story. :D

Those are much better than I expected. I have a twinge of regret at losing the "story" of the adventuring parties that is told in the complete paintings on the original PH and DMG, but I'd still be happy to have new books with the covers in that photo. The main thing is that they don't suck, which these don't. (And the MM cover may actually be an improvement over the original.)
