Delayed Spell Memorization

I think delayed spell memorization is fine.

The magic user would have to be carrying around his spell book to do this. Which does carry with it some risk.
I like the idea of large spell books and consider it during play.

Just past 0:25 is a spell book being carried for his master.

As for clerics, I would have no problem as long as it was 1st or 2nd level spells, beyond that I require a temple or other strong conduit for communicating with the deity or its servants.

A great example. But thats the megawizards book. Why couldn't Micky start with something much smaller (for his first 3 or 4 spells). Thats the problem I have with the concept. The starting 18 year old (or whatever) MU has a book the size of a 65 year old master badass wizard (just whats in that 2nd level book taking up so much space)? Doesn't seem to make alot of sense to me. Plus you have scrolls of spells you can find and copy into a book (suggesting size can be cut down, I realize they are "magical" and different of course, but still.

Why not allow a small travelling book (along with the larger one back in town). Is that something 1E states can't be done? Does Gygax mention NPC spell books in any of the modules as huge? Seems like there should be academic books and traveling books ala UA (though I think the UA's isn't the best solution either).

In any event, DMs seem to avoid the topic all together (at least every group I've ever gamed with or watched, with the exception of the B2 game at OSU).
