Go wait in the car, Chainsaw. :?
The DUNGEON MASTERS GUIDE City of Brass cover is good and bad at the same time. While its very representational of a high level adventure, it sends a clear message to the dumb: Satan is going to cornhole Miss USA with a big red member and theres nothing science or the military can do about it. - Gene Weigel

The answer to the question is that, yes, that polearm would draw blood. It's like a spiked hammer designed to punch through armor plate (helmets, I expect). Matthew Stanham and P&P probably know a lot more about it.

It could definitely split open a young farmhands head from crown to brow.

Unlike those non-sanguinary maces and staves.

Ball bustin' aside, I hear ya on this point, Chainsaw. As a rule, my players' characters don't carry polearms around much, either. They're kinda unwieldy in a dungeon setting, and we haven't had many large-scale land battles in our ongoing campaign. As a rule, they stick with swords, daggers, scimitars, throwing hammers, staves & rods, maces, and the like for melee weapons. Pretty traditional fare, I'm afraid. :D

Halflings and dwarves in the front rank, then taller guys behind with polearms. You've doubled your offensive capability.

My own players don't do that. Instead it's two poor fools holding off the ravenous hoards while the rest of the party stares at their butts.

Have the monsters start using organized tactics like that and see what happens. Sometimes we just have to train 'em right, especially if they didn't start off life as wargamers. 8)

That's a great piece of advice.

Indeed, here is the cleric:
PM_22-23.jpg
The way the system works is this: each class begins with a list of "favoured weapons". These are weapons with which the character is proficient and may use without penalty. Every four levels, the character may develop a proficiency with a weapon that is not on the favoured list; thus, even though a magician (for example) may begin play with familiarity in the staff, dagger, etc., he may develop skill with a longsword, if he trains (again every 4 levels).

So, as you can see, the cleric can use some swords in AS&SH, but he does not gain access to all spells as the 1e cleric does.

Thanks for asking!

Yeah yeah yeah! Thanks for taking the time to post that excerpt and then elaborate on it (sounds interesting and up my alley). I look forward to reading it all upon publication. :)

Ghul wrote:The AS&SH boxes came in this week. They are a sturdy whiteboard, wrapped with a color, matte finish top lid and black & white bottom lid. Interior dimensions are 7-3/4 x 9-3/4 x 2-1/2 inches. They look great! Also, the maps are in, too, measuring 22 x 28 inches, accordion folded to about a 7-inch square. We are still in layout for the manuals.

I was wondering whatever became of this project. I'm going to have to order one if for no other reason than to have that lovely box on my book shelf. ;-)
