Why don't level 5 clerics have a title? Somewhere down the line I recall reading it is supposed to be "prefect", but I don't know where I saw that anymore. I'm surprised the official errata didn't even address this!
In Cook/Marsh expert, level 4 is Vicar and level 5 is Curate (AD&D level 4).

Re: Missing level 5 cleric title
I read somewhere that it's Prefect too, but I can't tell you where, offhand: I pencilled it into my PHB, and haven't looked back.

Re: Missing level 5 cleric title
My copy is a 6th printing (January 1980), and it has Prefect printed for the 5th-level cleric, so it was an error corrected by the 6th printing or earlier.

Re: Missing level 5 cleric title
It was supposed to be Prefect, but was goofed up as Perfect. At some point, instead of correcting the error, the mistaken text was simply removed. I've never seen a copy of the PHB that actually spelled it correctly.
I believe my 3rd print (in the Acaeum's reckoning of print ordering http://www.acaeum.com/ddindexes/setpages/phb.html ) contains the mistaken Perfect.
The 7th & 8th prints (again, according to the Acaeum's reckoning) have that spot blank. I don't recall whether my copies of any intervening prints are blank or not.
Note also that many prints say they are 6th print, but they aren't actually the 6th. That "6th Printing, January 1980" blurb didn't get changed until 1987, and during the intervening time, there were many distinguishable individual printings.

Some updates for the pedants out there...
7th Print without the additional errata fixes (such as page 38's incorrect medium/long range modifiers) has the "Perfect" mistake.
7th print with the errata, and with the leftward descent in the page 108 illustration, has a blank spot instead of the "Perfect" mistake.
7th print with the errata, and with the rightward descent in the page 108 illustration, has a blank spot instead of the "Perfect" mistake.
My 4th print is also contains the "Perfect" mistake.Guy Fullerton wrote:I believe my 3rd print (in the Acaeum's reckoning of print ordering http://www.acaeum.com/ddindexes/setpages/phb.html ) contains the mistaken Perfect.
Turns out I don't have any 5th or 6th prints (by the Acaeum's reckoning). But I do have all three variations of the 7th print (meaning the "7th print" is actually three separate printings), and only one of those variations have the "Perfect" mistake, but the other two do not.The 7th & 8th prints (again, according to the Acaeum's reckoning) have that spot blank. Yes, well... my 5th level Cleric is perfect... so I don't see the problem.

Re-reading it, it seems my prefect is actually perfect!BlackBat242 wrote:My copy is a 6th printing (January 1980), and it has Prefect printed for the 5th-level cleric, so it was an error corrected by the 6th printing or earlier.
It seems I have an Acaeum-7th; Guy 1st PHB... white end papers, incorrect missile range sentence, perfect 5th level clerics.

Huh. Well, would 'ya look at that! All these years I never noticed that missing. Obviously, the 5th lvl clerics are Nameless Ones.
