That's my understanding.Alpharius wrote:So, instead of a 7th level spell, the Illusionist can cast 4 1st level Magic-User spells at the 14th level of ability.TRP wrote:Way to over-think things, guys. The spell description is very straightforward.
I added the emphasis.he or she actually takes four or more first level magic-user spells as a seventh level spell
Then, when he is 15th level, the Illusionist can cast 5 1st level Magic-User spells at the 15th level of ability.
Rinse and repeat?

Re: Illusionists + First Level Magic User Spells
The poor illusionist had to wait until 14th level to do something useful. Any player that stuck with an illusionist character that long needs a little sumpin' sumpin'.

If you include the Illusionist spells from Unearthed Arcana, and you should, they're actually quite good!

"Spell" and "a" aren't the root of the confusion. "Take" is what's debatable. Does it mean 'learn' or 'memorize'. I'm in the 'learn' camp.

Re: Illusionists + First Level Magic User Spells
I amend the passage to be 4 L1 MU spells period. It gets crazy otherwise at VHL as illusionists advance at the same rate as thieves after name level. One L1 MU spell is so pathetic, it's insulting to the player. "Let's see...mending or alter reality? burning hands or prysmatic spray? choices, choices"
