Magic-user spell retention

Post by thedungeondelver »

Are magic-user spells retained while the magic-user sleeps? Or must he re-memorize spells once he wakes up?

I would say yes, otherwise at higher levels the time to memorise a full allotment of spells becomes prohibitive.

This is how I always understood it as well.

I've always ruled that a mage can sleep without losing memory of his spells, but if he's knocked below zero hp and revived he loses and must re-memorize everything. Without having the books at hand I have no idea whether that's actually spelled out officially anywhere or if it's my own house rule.

I'm going to go with sleep = spells still retained (including magical sleep).

That's also how I play it to, and I don't think I made it up, but I also don't have books handy to verify.

Last time I double checked with the books on this subject, there was no mention of a magician losing his spells from being reduced to 0 or less hit points. It is a really common ruling, though, so it must have its basis somewhere prominent.

You could have some real problems if you were a somnambulent MU who talked in your sleep.

Spells are locked in memory until used, purposefully forgotten or magically wiped.

Oooo, this could make the Insanity rules a wee bit more fun I'm guessing. Or if you wanted to bring in a fatigue mechanic. Never thought about it, but an evil DM could play with this. Er, I mean a "rules conscious" DM.

I'd say the near-death experience (or death itself) is enough to wipe them out though. IE brought to 0, -1, -2 in a single blow, or bleeding out to -9 - or being brought to -3 or lower in a single blow, etc. etc.
