"Best" OD&D clone?

This is silly. You're saying clone authors don't like Gygax? They are almost all just rules compilations, without much flavor at all. The only one to impart a different mood that I'm aware of is LotFP.

Don't bother responding to "Montaigne's" points -- he's a banned ex-member (Kent) who tried to sneak back in under another name (for the 3rd time) and got caught and re-banned (for the 3rd time).

They're the original D&D books published in 1974, followed by four supplements (two of which are not actually brown in color). When people talk about "the LBBs," they're referring to the very first D&D rulebooks published.

The "little brown books" refers to the earliest printings of the three original books that made up the D&D game (Men & Magic, Monsters & Treasure, The Underworld & Wilderness Adventures). They are called "little" because they are thin and were printed in digest format. Brown refers to the color of the cover and differentiates them from later printings which had grey covers. These were eventually phased out in the late 70's and replaced with the AD&D hardcovers (Player's Handbook, Dungeon Masters Guide and the various Monster Manuals).

Note that those "little books" are TAN, not brown, thus "LTB" is correct!

"LBB" actually refers to the "little BLACK books" of the original Traveller RPG.
