While thinking about Wheggi's challenge in this thread I began to ponder some creative uses of the polymorph other spell, which led to some questions:
Would a charmed monster that is polymorhped into another monster still be under the effect of the charm?
What would happen if a summoned monster is polymorphed into another monster?
Do you put any kind of limitations on what creatures can be polymorphed into?
Polymorph Other Questions
Re: Polymorph Other Questions
I would say yes, it is still charmed if it retained the mind of the previous creature. If it literally became the new creature, mind and body the charm magic would fade? If a humanoid was turned into a monster or animal I would say the charm would automatically break due to it becoming a creature that is not effected by such a spell. Or perhaps say that it remains dormant while in the form of the new creature, and if turned back the charm would resume.
With the description using the example of turning someone into a blue dragon I doubt there is much limitation to what you can turn someone into.

If encounters were balanced, half the party would die every fight.
Re: Polymorph Other Questions
I am inclined to say it breaks the charm. A saving throw is granted to a creature being polymorphed so it can be viewed as an attack. Even if the save is successful they might not survive. Harmful actions against a charmed creature end the effect so I say creature turns and attacks caster.
The exception might be if the creature can communicate clearly with the caster and understands what the caster is asking of him. If it is of low intelligence or communication is minimal I say No Way.

Re: Polymorph Other Questions
Is it possible to basically create and control any monster you want by using monster summoning I (3rd level spell) followed by polymorph other (4th level spell)?
I am inclined to say yes. After all, that is burning two mid-level spells plus there is the small chance that the summoned monster may die from the polymorph, and the intelligence of the summoned monster may limit what it can be polymorphed into.
Still a killer combination, though, as the H.A.R.D. Challenge thread has shown.
As for polymorphing charmed monsters, if communication is possible I suppose the monster could be "talked into" allowing the polymorph without it being viewed as an attack. I do agree that if the mentality of the subject should change then the charm could be broken, possibly allowing another save (as the new form) with a +4.
