Dice - Show 'em if ya got 'em!

Post by Chainsaw »

So, if you have dice that are special in some way - you always use them, think they're lucky (or just cool), were your first set, EGG gave them to you, etc, let's see 'em!

The ones I used in capitalbill's game (back when we met more often) were these ruby red Gamescience dice supplemented with some casino d6s. Behold!!!

My standard dice set is either a set of black and purple solid Chessex or Armory dice I've had for at least 20 years or a set of crap 70s TSR dice I bought from Noble Knight Games a few years ago, supplemented with a bunch of white, red, and green six-siders (5 or 6 of each, IIRC) I bought at a liquor store and a pair of percentile dice including one of those fancy "00" d10s that I remember buying at the time I started my Mythus game (so summer 1992). Maybe when I get home I'll take a picture of 'em :)

I've also got a Crown Royal bag filled with a bunch of other dice that I never use.

Here are a few of my Gamescience collection (almost all vintage), some still in the tube, and the obligatory Crown Royal bag.

Usually when I'm running or playing AD&D I use the purple & black ones and when I'm running/playing OD&D I use the crappy TSR ones, and the supplemental d6s and d% get used with both. My black d20 is the killer and is almost certainly biased towards rolling high -- I swear it comes up 20 about 1 time in 3 (which is how I was able whack two PCs in a single combat round at SCMC3 when they were facing the vorpal-blade-wielding guardian daemons)

Of note:

Holmes set dice - This d20 has saved my ass so many times. Of note a critical hit against a 4 hd white ape in Philotomy's "Cromlech Tor" by my level 2 Cleric. It was do or die and I did the damn thing.

Cook set dice - I have reason to believe the 30 year old crayon gave me ringworm, I don't fault them for it.

HeroQuest dice- Good for divining the unknown.

Red and Blue d10 - These are the first dice I ever owned. I dare you to test your fate on any of my d100 tables. They are dialed in.

Giant Red d12 - You doubt the importance or utility of the d12? I will throw this at your face.

d12 hit Location die - Your arm's off. No it isn't.

What I wish I had
More identical d6's. Casino dice are on the list.
More d8's - What? You don't think i have enough?

For good measure, book I keep close at hand:
Image

Hackmaster, AD&D, Warhammer and some other knick knackas. There's also some modules and pdf prints tucked in the top there.

The next row down is 3 ring binder containing such indispensable tomes as Kellri's tables, my own DM binder with countless chart's I've accumulated to supplement the DMG, all the BFRPG modules, All the Dragonsfoot modules, and other such sundries.

That other shelf isn't much to look at I won't post a pic.

I have POUNDS of maps. Ridiculous maps I may never use, I just draw them.

Forgot to mention the two 6-siders with skulls for the 1s that I bought at the same time as the d% (when I started my Mythus game in 1992). There's also a few stray extras - a red d10, a purple 0-9 d20, and a black d6.

Am I the only one here that has a TON of dice? I doubt I could get them all in the same picture...

Nope. I'm in the same boat. And, yes, I do use them at the table. 8)

I've got a lot, but not a ton. I have 15 or so complete sets of Gamescience dice, plus about another 20 loose GS dice, 3 sets of old armory dice, 3 or 4 sets of dice from various TSR gamma world, basic, and expert sets, a set from a holmes basic set, some old I-think-they're-armory-but-I'm-not-sure translucents from back in the day, various newer chessex, koplow, and non-funky non-rare dwarven stone dice, some no-name translucent sets I bought to hand out to newbs, a bunch of customized dice from conventions, a set of six black six-siders with a maltese cross for the "1" that I bought from the Fight in the Skies Society (still pissed I didn't by any with the roundels), various generic six siders ranging from old AH dice to random boardgame castoffs, and several six siders with roman numerals, jolly rogers for the "1", etc...

So, not a ton, but quite a few.

I have more, but those pictured are what I have used lately when I'm playing. Back at NTRPG Con I used my S&W:WB set. If I were DM'ing, I'd supplement from the rest of the hoard (mostly sets of black, red, white, grey Chessex and a few sets of black and ruby unpainted Gamescience). My wife has a couple pink sets (brand new! never used!).

P.S. She picked them out.. wasn't me saying "Oh she's a girl, she will want pink."

I only use the huge 6-siders when I roll up characters, nothing else.
