BTB 1E: a Half-elven C/MU in platemail?

Post by fingolwyn »

I'm in the process of creating new characters for a new 1E game and just noticed something that has escaped me for about 30 years. Apparently a half-elven cleric/magic-user (multiclassed character) can wear platemail and still cast spells (without taking it off). The description under Half-elf (pg. 17) indicates only that multiclassed clerics aren't restricted by weapons, but thieves are by armor and weapons, and the description under Multi-classed Characters: Cleric/Magic-user (pg. 32) indicates that a benefit of being a cleric/magic-user is the use of armor and better weapon selection. These sections further indicate that this benefit is offset by the fairly low level limit (cleric 5, magic-user 8 with 18 INT).

Am I missing something somewhere, perhaps in another core book (DMG?) or a Gygax-issued errata clarification? Or can a half-elf cleric/magic-user really wear chainmail/platemail while casting MU spells?

If it is of any interest, in Gygax's own campaign it apparently later transpired that only elf mail could be worn by such characters, which is the rule that eventually appeared in second edition.
