Depends on the timing. Sure it makes no sense to not have a valid mailing address while negotiating for more money, but once he'd found out he wasn't going to get that money and the strip was being discontinued it seems believable that he might have said "screw it" and written off whatever money was still owed him out of spite and disillusionment -- "they don't think I'm worth [X], well they can keep their damn [X/2]."

FWIW, I always found Moore's departure from the hobby similarly baffling and disappointing. I've always had a soft spot for him and some of his articles (such as "The Astral Plane" in issue 67) remain classics in my opinion. Too bad he's gone.
