I now have over 1,000 books/collections on my kindle, almost entirely from their free offerings. Because of the kindle I now have an excellent collection of Sabatini, Machen, Blackwood,etc... and for only a few bucks, Clark Ashton Smith, Howard, Conan Doyle, Lovecraft & the Complete Works of Shakespeare. I have a ton of material on pirates, the norse, greek philosophy, comparitive mythology, horror stories, fairy tales, history and classics, and general odds and ends. It is absolutely amazing. Doesn't quite make up for jet packs, moon cities and martian colonies that I was promised as a child, but it is a step in the right direction.Philotomy Jurament wrote:That's one thing I really love about Kindle and other ebook readers: there is a lot of excellent literature available for them that is absolutely free. (I don't have an actual Kindle, but I have the Kindle software on my computer and on my iPhone. Reading with the iPhone Kindle software works surprisingly well. I was shocked at how natural and painless it is. I thought it would be too small, but it's much like reading a column of text in a newspaper or magazine, which is very comfortable. I've been mildly tempted to get a full blown Kindle (or maybe an iPad), but since the iPhone has been working just fine, I've managed to resist the temptation, so far.JasonZavoda wrote:They are free for the kindle.
(My recent reads of both The Sea Hawk and Under the Red Robe were done with Kindle on the iPhone, and both were free downloads.)

I'm reading The Hobbit again for the billionth time, along with the Cities of Gold supplement for Fields of Glory . I will almost certainly follow this with Conquest of New Spain by Bernal Diaz for the billionth time, along with 2666 by Roberto Bolaño. Not quite sure how Tolkien fits in there with New World narratives, but I feel like there's some weird symmetry.

Re: What are you reading?
Just about to reread The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings/Silmarillion. I have a few of the volumes that contain Tolkien's various drafts. I've always wanted to get a complete set of them, and That 3 volume(I believe it's 3) set of The Hobbit. I've heard good things about it.Flight Commander Solitude wrote:I'm reading The Hobbit again for the billionth time, along with the Cities of Gold supplement for Fields of Glory . Finished Space Cadet by Heinlein. A good quick read from one of his young adult style books from before he went barking mad.

John Rateliff's edition of The Hobbit is excellent: http://www.amazon.com/History-Hobbit-Jo ... 0618964401 and I also like Doug Anderson's annotated version: http://www.amazon.com/Annotated-Hobbit- ... 715&sr=1-1JasonZavoda wrote:Just about to reread The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings/Silmarillion. I've stalled out in Tim Powers' _The Stress of Her Regard_ (read too many other books in between on this one), so I'll likely start another fiction piece soon. Perhaps Barker's first two Tekumel novels, which I've never read.

Re: What are you reading?
I found these two books last week in a local used book store. Although I've never seen any Tekumel RPG material, I am interested in reading these two books. They are next in the queue.grodog wrote:Barker's first two Tekumel novels, which I've never read.

How many Tekumel novels are there? I have Flamesong and The Man of Gold.grodog wrote:John Rateliff's edition of The Hobbit is excellent: http://www.amazon.com/History-Hobbit-Jo ... 0618964401 and I also like Doug Anderson's annotated version: http://www.amazon.com/Annotated-Hobbit- ... 715&sr=1-1JasonZavoda wrote:Just about to reread The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings/Silmarillion. Re: What are you reading?
There are apparently five:JasonZavoda wrote:How many Tekumel novels are there? I have Flamesong and The Man of Gold.
- The Man of Gold (1984)
- Flamesong (1985)
- Lords of Tsámra (2003)
- Prince of Skulls (2002)
- A Death of Kings (2003)
IIRC from comments that Victor Raymond made @ NTX, the last three are published by the Tekumel Foundation.

Re: What are you reading?
I've picked it up, but haven't gotten to it yet. I've read The Hobbit quite a few times now, guess it's time to break it out.grodog wrote:John Rateliff's edition of The Hobbit is excellent: http://www.amazon.com/History-Hobbit-Jo ...
Been slowly re-reading, when I have the odd bit of free time, a compilation of Somerset Maughm's Greatest Hits. Also, going to start Book Three of Fafhrd and Mouser's adventures. Enjoyed the first book a great deal. Some of the yarns in Book Two were jolly good, though thought couple of the later stories were a bit off.

Re: What are you reading?
I'm midway through Marryat's Mr. Midshipman Easy. It's excellent; thanks, again, for the suggestion. It's not exactly what I was expecting, but the story flows well and is quite humorous and entertaining. I'll be reading more Marryat. Do you recommend any specific titles?Flambeaux wrote:Oh...the middle ground is the original tales by Frederick Marryat.

Damn! Y'all're quick readers. I still got a couple chapters left on the Tarzan book I mentioned back on p.35 of this thread.

I picked up a lot of Andre Norton novels in the used book store too. Right now, I'm reading Star Rangers. I love the pulp.

Re: What are you reading?
Lately, I don't. For me, leisure stuff tends to come in bursts of activity. I'll read a lot for a while, then I'll get tired of that and work on D&D stuff for a while, then I'll get bored with that and focus on guitar for a while. Et cetera.austinjimm wrote:Damn! I'm now reading Marryat's Peter Simple.
