I gave up on Nu-Who right about the time Catherine Tate became a companion. I couldn't stand that character in the Christmas special and couldn't imaging having to see her every week, though I did watch a couple early episodes just to make sure. The Eccleston doctor was pretty good, but they really jumped the shark with the last episode and the whole Bad Wolf thing (it seemed really contrived). However, it was the whole "Catherine Tate's character is actually a long-lost half-timelord" thing that ended all interest for me in Nu-Who. I've been doing quite well since then with a Netflix account and all the old stuff on DVD (though there are still quite a few episodes missing).
