Old Geek Nirvana!

Post by Wheggi »

I've just gone over my schedule for this weekend, and realized that on Friday night I will be DMing the family through White Plume Mountain, Saturday night I'm going to catch Asia (with all the original members, playing their entire frist album!) and then Sunday I game with the guys.

Man, life is just good.

White Plume Mountain and Asia in the same weekend? Don't forget your parachute pants and Huey Lewis cassette tape. :)

I'm trying to talk my wife into wearing leg warmers and perming her hair, but I don't think she's biting. :?

Make sure you get in a few games of Tempest, Space Invaders, and Amidar at a local arcade, or go get MAME if you have too. :)

Original lineup of Asia, huh? Count me jealous.

That first Asia album always makes me think of D&D. It was often playing in the background when reading D&D books and working on dungeons when I was in middle school.

Don't forget BattleZone. You can't have a decent early 80s flashback without BattleZone.

Refresh my memory...is that the one with "Heat of the Moment" on it? If so, then I concur.

Yep, that's on the first album.

Excellent show! They still very much have thier chops, and rocked much harder than expected. The entire first album was played, as well as a few from Alpha and one song to represent each member's work outside of Asia ("Roundabout" for Howe; "In the Court of the Crimson King" for King Crimson, of whom Whetton was a member; a strong version of "Fanfare for the Common Man" to represent Palmer and ELP; and a surprisingly entertaining performance of The Buggles "Video Killed the Radio Star", Geoff Downes big hit outside of Asia).

They seemed to be having a really good time on stage, which is much better than watching them go through the motions. When they played "Heat of the Moment" they mentioned the movie The 40 Year Old Virgin. Its good to see these old prog musicians laughing with the movie and its portrayal of their band - as well as enjoying the renewed interest that movie has sparked in their music! - instead of being offended as prog musicians so often can be.

D'OH! How could I forget BattleZone!

And yes, you are thinking of the correct album.

Sounds awesome Wheggi! Glad it was a good show.

I always thought Asia, along with Iron Maiden, had some of the best album covers. Their videos were mighty fine, too.
