proud DM father-son moment

Post by grodog »

I taught Henry how to use Appendix A tonight for random dungeon generation, because he was stuck for ideas on how to keep building out the second level of his dungeon.

We started on a fresh BBP 6 spi sheet, rolled a "6" for the starting room configuration (so we built our own---"6" meaning we had to use a hexagon, of course!), and then went with where the dice (and previously-drawn sections) took us:

Henry was very excited, and really enjoyed the process of drawing out the various corridors, chambers and rooms, discovering what was behind doors, checking for secret doors in dead-end rooms, etc.

Here's the map that we came up with:

Then I showed him the Room/Chamber contents table, and talked him through how that gives great guidelines on how many rooms in a level should be empty, have monsters, monsters with treasure, unguarded treasure, etc. He will have the pleasure of checking all of those rooms and chambers tomorrow for contents, since we only worked on the map itself, not the contents/key while building out the rooms :D

Excellent. 8) My daughter doesn't show any interest in DMing, but she's having a lot of fun playing with her cousins (I DM) when we can get them together.

Now that's a great post

One of my favorite sections in the book. It's almost it's own little mini-game.
The DUNGEON MASTERS GUIDE City of Brass cover is good and bad at the same time. While its very representational of a high level adventure, it sends a clear message to the dumb: Satan is going to cornhole Miss USA with a big red member and theres nothing science or the military can do about it. - Gene Weigel

Great idea, I'll have to try this!

WOTC's site still has 4-page pdf extract of Appendix A available --- http://www.wizards.com:80/dnd/files/exc ... t_dmg4.pdf
This was made available as a preview when they were reprinting the DMG. Handy if you just want to print these pages quickly, or find them quickly.
It is missing the last bit on using the Random Dungeon Generation for Solo Play.

I mentioned in passing last night about there being some good articles with dungeon design ideas and advice in them, and Henry asked this evening to sample one. So I read aloud Musson's Dungeon Architect part 1 and the first part of part 2 to him while he was taking his bath. He liked it, wants to hear more! :D

Nice! Enjoy!
