Dwarven Forge collection

Post by Kellri »

A buddy of mine is trying to sell his Dwarven Forge stuff. If you're interested let me know and I'll put you in touch.
To my gaming friends: I have decided to sell off my fairly large collection of Dwarven Forge Sets. I have 15+ sets that are in great shape in their Styrofoam packaging. (No boxes.) Most of these sets are first editions and extremely rare. I also have smaller supplemental accessories that are mint in their boxes. If you live (or plan to visit soon) in the Northern Ohio area and are interested in purchasing these sets, send me a private message and I will send you a list, with prices, of what I have. Serious enquirers only, please. No, I will not ship or deliver these large and fragile sets. You will have to stop by the house and pick them up. If you want to know what they look like, here is a link to the manufacturer's web page:

Pity he won't ship.

Odd, I had someone approach me online the other day about his collection (he's here in FL, though), and someone else had a MASSIVE (like...easily $2k worth) of the new items they were unloading.

Something going on? Serendipity?

I'm guessing this one is pretty big. He's a former owner of a chain of FLGS in that area and he's selling this one for around 3,000 USD. I advised him to try the Acaeum.

After he closed up his gaming stores he went into making and selling costumes to theaters and designing 3D assets for the Second Life game. He's been bugging me for a couple years to try that out, but I need that about as much as I need another drug problem.

I've always loved looking at Dwarven Forge, especially the big elaborate dungeons at conventions, but I've never bought any because I don't think I would ever get my money's worth of it (especially considering how many unpainted and unused minis I have!).

Once in a while I think, "Oh, I'll buy a single small set to help introduce my son to D&D, to give him a strong visual aid at first," but then I realize I don't want to set the expectation that it's a required or even important part of the game. So, probably won't ever buy into it. It is cool looking though! Good luck to your friend, Kellri.

I myself have no plans to ever go the Dwarven Forge route, or tiles, or buildings or anything like that. It looks cool as all get out, but most of the time it's impractical. You have to either stand up to see everything going on over the walls or have the set up on the floor and stoop down to move anything. Plus, you have to worry about Mountain Dew spills. Plus, most of these systems are expensive, and they take up tons of space. Worst of all, unless it's a dungeon where the players are given the complete layout, and it has no secret doors/rooms, you have to set up on the fly which slows the game down. :?

I agree. Great in theory and to look at but perhaps not all that practical in actual play.

I have avoided it as it would be my undoing.

I'd love another toy to play with, but alas, apartment space won't allow me.

Like many of you , there's no way I will ever be able to feasibly afford this kind of thing or have enough space to store the stuff. By the same token - it certainly looks very cool and if I hit the lottery I would go DEEP down that rabbit hole. Every once in awhile I find myself looking over the prices for professionally painted miniature armies online, terrain and so on and imagining what it would take to get the stuff shipped over to Vietnam and then I realize - Jesus, Scot, you have a hard enough time getting a decent set of dice together - and now you're considering what it would take to get involved in miniature wargaming?! Get ahold of yourself!

I bought a lot of DF in their first KS, as I got a bit caught up in it, and have never even unboxed it

Nah, you build it all out first and then cover the sections with black felt cloths.

Works really really well.

When I played with the Dwarven Forge maker at NTRPG he used black cloths to cover everything. He did have a secret door/room in it as well as some hidden pit trap tiles. It was a rather interesting little set up. This year he had both caverns and dungeon style rooms in his adventure. The cost, though, I think would exclude me. But recently I purchased some of the Hirst Arts molds for making your own dungeons out of plaster or dental stone. They are a bit pricey as well but they can be reused for many projects or sold after you are done with them. I do not have an extensive collection of minis so I doubt that I would use these creations on a daily basis with my group.

Now that I think about it, I could almost see myself buying an inn, a standard dungeon room (and short wall section), a standard cavern room (and short wall section) and maybe some other common environment room and then using them like "battle mats" whenever a complex melee happened. Usually at conventions I'm perfectly happy to place numbers/letters on a whiteboard or battlemat to track things, but maybe at home I could indulge the luxury of something more scenic - like a DF room with minis. Some day, maybe!

So true. Additionally, the SPACE it takes up to store it all and 'carry it' around makes it impractical to ever game unless you do so at home..
