Star Wars (Novels)

Post by MageInBlack »

I am an audio book guy. Although some would say it is a lazy pursuit of absorbing the written word, I lump it under time quality management. I have said, at various times, that I would walk an hour in the morning and sometimes an hour after work. During my walks, I listen to audio books. It takes a boring walk and turns it into something I look forward to so I can continue with the story I am listening to. So although I am starting off with a digression of sorts, I would encourage anyone to try it if they find they don't make time to get some physical activity.

Anyway, this thread is meant to chat about thoughts on any of the Star Wars novels that were produced. I just finished this Star Wars novel...

...and I had a hard time with it. It made me think of Hemlock Grove where you have (in my opinion) too many stories going on within the story. Too many characters in different locations. The whole time wondering when it is going to come together. It did near the end and this is a trilogy so I will give the second book a whirl. It just took too long to get there.

One thing that annoyed me was the way the author had to insert "Star Wars-y" adjectives into particular areas. He couldn't state that something was going to crumble like a "house of cards". He had to write that it would crumble like a "house of sabacc cards". Or, "I've been doing this since you were in space diapers". What in the fuck are space diapers? Some were funny like, "he could sell sand to a Jawa". That was pretty good. But overall he used this writing style a little too much compared to other Star Wars novels.

Another one I am eager to jump into is this...

...which is supposed to be a bunch of short stories based on others witnessing the events of the movies and how they perceived or interacted with the events.

I actually enjoyed the Wendig trilogy, which for me is a little odd because I'm not a big fan of Star Wars fiction that doesn't feature any of the main characters that I'm used to seeing from the movies. I agree that some of the phrases seemed a little forced, but I thought the overall plot and characterization was pretty solid and there were enough references to the Battle of Endor that I felt like it was a continuation of the movies.

I read the Han Solo trilogy when those first came out, and Splinter of the Mind's Eye as well, and until like...whenever it was that the Expanded Universe novels started rolling out in the 1990s, that was it (aside from the comic). Then the EU blew up, I couldn't keep up and I got on with other things.
