Amazon to do REH Conan series

Post by TRP »

I think they're just fucking with me. If it seems too good to be true ...

Created and written by Condal, Conan retells the classic character’s story via a return to his literary origins.
Condal admits to having a personal obsession with the material, which Sapochnik also has been a longtime fan of, leading to their collaboration on the project with the creative goal to return to the original Howard literary works and produce a series that is faithful to the spirit of his Conan character. Conan the Barbarian, aka Conan the Cimmerian, was created by Howard in 1932 in a series of fantasy stories published in Weird Tales magazine.

Well, well... I certainly can't complain about someone at least trying to produce some REH based Conan - would be great to finally have something truer to the roots. I do like the Milius movie for the most part, but that is kinda its own thing.

Well, I'll give it a shot. Look for a lot of Belit, as a love interest, is my prediction.

That sounds promising. A faithful adaptation of "Beyond the Black River" (for example) has always seemed an obvious thing to do, but instead we have gotten the "Conan" movies released thus far.

Skeptical until proven wrong, but they are at least dropping the right names. They deserve a fair look.

New Conan adaptations always say they’re going back to REH for inspiration. The Jason Momoa movie definitely did. We’ll see if it’s any more true this time around...

The same was claimed about the John Carter movie. The director was a Burroughs fan, he grew up on the "<Whatever> of Mars" books, etc. For pete's sake, they couldn't even call it A Princess of Mars.

De Camp also claimed to be a Conan fan, so I'm not holding my breath that this is going to be any good.

But maybe? :|

I wouldn't even need rehashed REH stories, because well done new stories adhering to Howard's vibe would be fine. Mostly, all that's needed is a wandering, kick ass barbarian who wasn't a slave freed by his master, is not avenging his father's murder, nor is he working to make the world a better place. Well, not making the world a better place for anyone besides himself.

I picture the wandering do-gooder tv series, only minus the do-gooder part. Get rich or die trying one brutal kingdom after another.

Current hope for this to not suck: 0 (zero) percent.
Good intentions from producers, screenwriters, etc. do not automatically result in good product.
Time and time again H'wood ignores the two fundamental precepts of success:

1) know the source material.
2) respect the fan-base.

After the travesty that was John Carter, I don't think that the two above points are even part of the industry's process.
