Triplanetary Kickstarter

Post by francisca »

Steve Jackson games is running a kikcstarter to repint the old Triplanetary game.

It looks good to me, I read the rules, and am considering supporting the KS.

Anybody here have any experience playing it?

This is cool. Triplanetary is definitely a classic (designed by Marc Miller, who later went on to write the Traveller rpg) and has long been a favorite of Steve Jackson. Back when he was the GOH at our local gaming con c. 1990 we all thought he’d want to run his own games - Ogre, Car Wars, GURPS, etc. - but nope, he spent all his time playing Triplanetary :)

I sure hope Jackson approaches someone to do the re-design work who has absolutely no experience working for Steve Jackson Games. A guy on Boardgamegeek, Kwanchai, did redesigns of both Ogre and Melee and they are just fantastic. Of course, SJG quickly put the kibosh to that with C&D letters and threats of a lawsuit - I suspect because those things are just way better than anything SJG themselves could produce. I'm willing to bet if SJG threw some money Kwanchai's way they'd have a version of OGRE/GEV and maybe The Fantasy Trip that people could get excited about for reasons other than sheer nostalgia.
