(continued)

It is true that both DMs died while the entire party survived, but that's only because the dead PCs were resurrected!

The group was armed to the teeth with all the best magic items: Welleran had a sword with 6 wishes, I think Flambeaux had a staff of wizardry, Laura G (not on these forums) had a medallion of ESP, James G (not on these forums) had a ring of X-ray vision, benjoshua had a flying carpet, I think someone had a gem of true-seeing, Byron (not on these forums) had a sword of life-stealing, and I don't know what all else. For reasons that will become clear, this group would become known as "the Ladder Company."

Side Note: Of the 20 or so players, maybe 8 of them were forum members. Several of the players had never even heard of the K&KA forum!

TEMPLE ENTRANCE

The goal was to find the Mystic Cup of Gygax, a magical cup of tremendous power, lost in a magical cave maze under a desecrated temple. The party arrives at the forgotten temple of the Red Priest, which was overrun by forces of chaos and turned into an unholy place. The angelic statues were disfigured, and demonic statues were placed along the walls, 6 on the left, 6 on the right, and 6 on the back wall.

Piper took a look at the demonic statues and was possessed by an evil spirit, causing him to attack the party. The group piled onto Piper to stop him, so the spirit jumped into Byron. Byron slew Piper, since he was in a prone position, before the spirit took enough damage and was driven out. Byron soaked up several heals to get him back into fighting shape.

(It was only later I found out who Piper was. Piper was a good sport and took his death well.) One death, and they hadn't made it out of the first room, things were looking up for Alucard.

The only way forward was through a large round stone, which had 6 wax seals marked by a sinister baboon face. Chainsaw recommended lawful PCs should try breaking the seals (since he knew the seals had especially harmful effects for lawful PCs; chaotic PCs would be unharmed).

I believe Tetramorph was the first to volunteer to remove a seal. His nose became elongated and crooked and lost 2 CHA. Laura G lost 2 levels (she was listed as chaotic neutral, which I took to be Neutral). Bryan (not on these forums, I had suspected he was EOTB's long lost brother, as they struck me as being similar, but apparently he is actually Welleran's brother?) had to save vs death or die. Death erupted out of the ground, attempting to drag Bryan into the grave, but Bryan rolled a natural 20 and kicked dirt into the face of Death before stomping him back into the earth. Someone else permanently lost 1d6 points of strength.

Another person stepped forward to remove a seal, and as he was chaotic, he was unharmed. Seeing this, he removed the final seal, and it was a good thing he was chaotic (I was doing false rolls behind the screen when he broke the seals, and on the last seal, I rolled a 1, which would have been the worst possible result!)

SWORD OF MITRA

The room beyond had a statue that was broken into 7 pieces. Flambeaux, Jeff, and Tetramorph reassemble the pieces, and the statue is magically restored to the image of Mitra. Reassembled, the statue moved forward, revealing a secret compartment containing the great sword of Mitra! Jeff took possession of the sword, a sword of tremendous power. He then went back up and used the sword to resurrect Piper.

3 DEMON DOORS

The third chamber had a demon-woman with 4 arms and a baboon head stapled on, chanting prayers in front of 3 demon doorways. She told the players they could ask each of the doors one yes or no question; one only answered truthfully, another only tells lies, and one is chance. Jeff, emboldened by the high INT/EGO of the sword of Mitra naturally attacked the demon-woman. She screamed, causing blocks to fly out at everybody, but she was easily defeated.

The doorway of truth would put them on the Straight Path (the shortest and easiest path to the cup), the doorway of lies would put them on the Winding Way (the longest and most dangerous path to the cup), and chance would take them to a random location. The party used the gem of true-seeing (man I hate that thing) to find the correct door and moved along.

TEST OF HEROES

They entered a room with a grinning but fake red dragon (really a magic hydra starting with one head). There were two doorways, one marked Retreat, the other marked "A true hero must sacrifice himself."

The players ignored the clue and launched into an all-out assault on the fake dragon. Dishing out damage, they cut off its head, but the head is replaced with two heads as the dragon grew even larger. So the party doubled their efforts and attacked again. Chainsaw casts a web spell on the dragon, trapping the front fighters to the dragon (including Tetramorph).

They keep attacking the dragon, heads are lopped off, and the dragon grows even bigger, breaking the web. The party then decides to attack the body rather than the heads, but the dragon continues to sprout more heads and gain more hit dice.

Chainsaw is calling for someone to offer themselves to the dragon to be eaten (as per the clue, but this is in fact the intentionally wrong tactic and will only serve to get people swallowed whole and killed outright). Fortunately for the party, due to the noise and chaos in the room, I don't think many hear chainsaw's "advice."

The party begins to realize that a frontal assault isn't getting the job done, so Jeff, focusing on the clue, kills himself by stabbing himself with the sword of Mitra. (This wasn't exactly the way to defeat the magic hydra, but we figured it was close enough.) When Jeff died, the hydra dropped dead, too. Jeff was somehow brought back to life, I believe he was raised by a cleric.

SWAMI ISLAND

The party finds themselves on an island surrounded by a lake of fire and brimstone. They use the flying carpet to transport themselves into a walled in structure containing the caged 3-legged frog, the dead tree, and the chanting swami with the 3 doors. The frog explains they can only get the swami to open the correct door by telling him something that is neither true nor a lie, and the frog would be happy to tell them what to say if they'll only let him out.

James G solves the riddle and gets the swami to open the correct door, leaving the frog in the cage for now...

CHEATING AT MONKEY CHESS

Next, the party encounters a bunch of baboons with British accents playing chess. The head monkey invites the party to either finish the chess game in progress, or else engage in a game of "monkey chess." Naturally, just about everyone wants to play monkey chess, although a few of the wiser folks there voice their doubts about agreeing to play a game they know nothing about...

Agreeing to meet the monkey chess challenge, the baboons bring forth their monkey chess champion, a giant gorilla named Jack Ass Kong. The party sends forth its nimblest/highest DEX warrior, Laura G (not a good choice, as she had already been level-drained by 2 levels!).

Laura G and Jack Ass Kong face off on a raised circular platform that randomly tilts with spikes springing up (think Flash Gordon movie). The baboons climb a ladder to one platform, stocked with barrels and bananas, and the party climbs a ladder to the other platform, where they may use whatever items and magics they have. The first champion to be knocked off loses!

I was pretty confident in Jack Ass Kong, as he is one bad monkey, but with all of the spells being brought to bare against JAK, the players were on the verge of winning. They were trying things like charming JAK, to get him to jump off, and while he made his saves, it was just a matter of time (meanwhile, the baboons were throwing barrels and bananas at Laura G and the party).

And this is what I had feared about the Straight Path. Being well acquainted with Murphy's Law, I just knew the party would somehow get on the Straight Path, bypassing most of the encounters we had spent so much time designing, and the adventure would be way too easy and short. If they defeated Jack Ass Kong, then they would have completely bypassed the Winding Way and end hours early.

But, what do you know, on the verge of victory, our party of ne'er-do-wells snatches defeat! YES! For some strange reason, perhaps not realizing how close they were to winning, some of the players hop onto the magic carpet and fly down to the platform to help Laura G, which of course, is cheating. "Cheaters!" the baboons shout, as the party's platform opens up, dropping the party into the magic smoke below. The magic smoke forms into a large hand and reaches up, pulling down the PCs on the magic carpet as well.

They are taken to the start of the Winding Way. Back to the beginning with you, hahaha!

Correct - he can't be bothered with newfangled compooter things...and he does bear a passing resemblance to EOTB.

That's cool with me.

Benjoshua is a regular at the Acaeum, and he also played in last year's Dungeon of Dracula game (he was the paladin that went down in flames courtesy of Cerebus, but was brought back with a magic leaf). He posted a review of his games, and I enjoyed his summary of this year's K&KA game:
benjoshua wrote:Thursday night‘s game turned out to be one of my favorites even though my expectations were low. It was the K&KA Social game with lots of beer for everyone (and I usually avoid alcohol for genetic reasons). Even more daunting, the game hosted twenty-four players and two Dungeon Masters! Only one player in the room was female. :O Anyway, I could not envision this going well. Fortunately, I rolled up my character with the magic item, Magic Carpet, and I realized this would likely prove valuable, and it did. Our goal was to retrieve the Gygax Cup by going through a bunch of puzzle rooms. As the evening progressed and people became more drunk, I was wondered whether we would even finish the dungeon. Not only did we complete the mission, we also “killed” each of the DM’s! Not only that, each participant received a boxed copy of the dungeon we played in! :O Below is a picture of that game in progress.
"Thursday night‘s game turned out to be one of my favorites even though my expectations were low. It was the K&KA Social game..." He must know us well! 8)

"Anyway, I could not envision this going well." What can I say, benjoshua is seriously one of the smartest, most insightful players I have had the pleasure of playing with, and his comments here only prove my point. We had a fun chat a couple of days later, where I discovered to my horror that he has really bad taste in art (he is a fan of Elmore and Easley).

All of these good reviews - I'm not going to be able to grab other stuff that sells out quicker on reg night and still get a seat! Looks like the best kept secret of NTRPG is getting out.

OK. Here's a MediaFire link:
http://download1512.mediafire.com/slb8q ... -opt-a.pdf

When you click it, it may download straight into your "downloads" folder, rather than appearing in your browser window. The file name is "KK2-FINAL2-opt-a.pdf". (I'll see if I can get Papers & Paychecks to set up a better link for us.)

The only thing different than the module handed out at the social is that I corrected an error and added Steve's box art on the title page.

EDIT: I'll leave the link above, but here's the official K&KA link provided by Papers & Paychecks!

THE SUNDERED THRONE

The party found themselves in a cave with a throne that was part stone and part crystal. Behind the throne was a crystal portal, and the floor around the throne and portal was covered in mud. On the throne appeared a beautiful, laughing, cruel woman, who slowly morphed into an old wizard, before disappearing entirely.

Someone sticks a 10' pole into the mud, and a mud arm reaches up and seizes it, transforming into stone, causing the pole to be stuck. Someone announces they have a 10' ladder, so they lean the ladder over the mud and onto the throne.

(Seriously, apart from the original NES Legend of Zelda, since when was a 10' ladder standard dungeon equipment?! In fact, there was not one but TWO people claiming to have ladders in their inventory, thus "the Ladder Company.")

Someone else uses the magic carpet to get to the throne. Sitting on it, messing with it, but nothing happens. He looks down and sees a box at the base of the throne through the crystal half. Pulling out a crowbar, he is able to pry the throne halves apart.

In the process of prying the throne apart, he falls into the mud, and is covered except his hands and head, and was now encased in stone. People then took one of the ladders and tried to beat the stone with it, but to no avail (yeah, that didn't make any sense to me, either, but I'm guessing the alcohol was beginning to take effect on the players).

The box is locked, but Flambeaux opens it with a Knock spell. Inside the box are a pile of jewels that talks to them. The pile of jewels explains that these are the remains of the jewel man, Papers n Paychecks. Him and the mud man were once brother princes, and to destroy the mud man, they must cast these jewels into the mud.

The players cast the jewels into the mud, which causes the mud to gather into a large mud man who attacks the party. The mud man is only harmed by blunt weapons, so Jimm pretends to record the damage behind his screen when it is hit by other types of weapons. (This was so fake, a number of players point out that he wasn't really writing down the damage being done!)

Even though the mud man is essentially a clay golem, having a lot of hit dice and doing 3d10 damage per hit, after several rounds, the mud man has only done a measly 5 points of damage. I politely inform Jimm his rolling sucks and even I can roll better than that, intending to take over the rolling, but by that time we lost initiative and the players finished off the mud man.

During the combat, Flambeaux became invisible and hid next to the crystal portal. So naturally when the gem-encrusted mud man died, he was smashed to pieces, and the crystal portal with him, doing damage to Flambeaux since he was by the shattering portal.

BLUE ORB, REPTILE FACE, RED ORB

The next room was round with a silver pillar in the middle. In the middle of the pillar was a 5' gap filled with a blue energy orb. The doors entering and leaving were covered in a blue energy field, and there were bones littered around the pillar. (There was also a corresponding red orb and gold pillar room nearby.)

The players could enter the room, easily enough, but they met resistance and took damage upon leaving. Jeff simply pushed through and ate the damage, easy to do when you have an 8th level fighting man's hp and a sword that gives you regeneration!

Other players weren't so lucky. Flambeaux used telekinesis to use a chain to connect the two ends of the pillar (unknowingly threatening the blue orb which was in fact an alien energy being; holding a metal object between the pillars, its life support system, for 3 rounds straight was one of the few ways to kill the blue alien orb). The blue orb zaps Flambeaux, and he drops the chain and grudgingly pushes through the field, taking more damage. The young guy seated to Jimm's left, don't know his name, stuck his hand into the blue orb, which is the only way to communicate with it.

(I'm not sure Jimm and I saw eye to eye on the orbs. I would take the blue orb, and Jimm would control the red orb. My idea was to play my orb as Jimm, and that he would play the red orb as Steve, which I thought would be funny, but I'm not sure if Jimm did it that way.)

I sent Jimm out of the room, and then said to the players: "Greetings earthling. I am Jimm, from the planet Austin. Your planet is in great danger from another alien nearby, a red orb named Steve from the planet Fortress Worth. He is the color red, which is also the color of Darth Vader's lightsaber, so you know he is evil. His people have tried to impose their way of life upon my fellow Austinites, that our streets should be laid out in a logical manner, and other things that are unnatural, for our motto is to 'keep Austin weird.' You must retrieve the blue gem in the next room so I can charge it; you can then use it to destroy the red orb and save your planet. Be sure not to touch the red gem for it is cursed!"

The blue orb made the guy promise to destroy the red orb, which he did, but I don't think he or the other players fully understood that the orbs could detect lies and they had to answer truthfully. In any case, there was no way to enforce it. Many players promised to destroy the red orb, while others simply powered through the force field.

In the next room, they encountered the giant reptile head with gems for eyes, one blue, one red. They tried to pry off the gems, and the tongue shot out to attack. The party did a lot of damage to the tongue, leaving the tongue with just 1hp! (The tongue would retract and regenerate and renew the attack if heavily damaged.) Unfortunately for Jimm and I, the players won initiative and permanently destroyed the tongue before it could do any real harm. Both gems were removed.

There were several doors out of this room, one of which led to Jimm's orb, the red orb. When they entered this room, Jimm sent me out of the room, and I still do not know what he told the players.

At this point, the game began to bog down, as their was confusion about which orb and gem did what, what course of action the party should take, or even which direction to go. (I suspect some of this was due to the booze taking effect.) People were starting to get frustrated.

Eventually, Byron brought the blue orb (me) the blue gem for me to charge it, so he could kill the red orb. He wasn't sure if he wanted to go through with it, so I told him I could give it 3 charges (of lightning bolt) if he promised to use 1 charge destroying the red orb. He demanded that I give the gem 4 charges (which I could not do). Since he was being obstinent, I agreed (lied) to charge it 4 times (I only charged it once) since he promised to do what he could to not only kill the red orb, but also protect the blue orb from the red gem (as it turns out, Byron lied, too).

Byron killed the red orb, and I think it was Brian who killed the blue orb (thus both DMs were slain).

Most of the party agreed to go one direction, but Byron insisted on going another direction (past the red orb room), so the party was split up.

The party minus Byron arrived in the 7 Doors of Death room - 7 doors, numbered 1-7, each with a different image painted on it:
Door 1: Half black, half white
Door 2: Upside down bowl
Door 3: Apple tree on a hill
Door 4: Crescent moon
Door 5: Eagle in flight
Door 6: 3-headed goat chewing grass
Door 7: Plain door

In the middle of the room was a pedestal with 7 gems, each numbered and corresponding to the 7 doors. The challenge was to find the eighth door.

The party thought it might be a combination of doors, such as 1 & 7, or 2 & 4 (as in 2x4), and tried touching 2 doors at the same time. Failing to open any doors, they then turned to the pedestal where the first person tried to remove one of the gems, and was electrocuted for his trouble. (All you had to do was touch a gem, and it would open the corresponding door. But if you tampered with the gems or pedestal in any way, you'd get shocked. Since the first person to touch a gem was shocked, it was a long time before someone eventually touched a gem to open a door.)

Someone used a gem of true-seeing (I hate, hate, hate that thing!) and looked through all 7 doors. 6 of the doors had smoke behind them, but door #1 had fire behind it. The party (correctly) picked door #1 and eventually managed to open it.

LAKE OF FIRE

The party exited to an island on the far end of the lake of fire from Swami Island. There was a boat on the shore, but benjoshua used his flying carpet to take the first load of PCs back to Swami Island. About halfway, they encounter a giant, 4-armed Efreet with a large trident. The Efreet informed them they were trespassing and demanded they pay him one magic item or else face his wrath. The party wisely chose to pay him off and proceeded to Swami Island (I think the first payoff was a pretty sweet magic sword formerly owned by Tetramorph).

Benjoshua returned to the other island, and had to pay the Efreet one of his magic items. Benjoshua gathered another load of PCs, and informed the rest they would have to use the boat to cross. Both groups made it to Swami Island after paying proper tribute (depleting the group of several magic items in the process). One group tried to pay off the Efreet with a potion of Clairaudience, but he took it and threw it into the lake of fire and demanded they give him something better, none of that cheap junk!

They return to the Swami, where the 3-legged frog begs for the party to release him (a very foolish thing indeed!). They tell the Swami what they did before, he opens the door for them, and before entering the door, the party lets out the frog! The party doesn't stick around, they immediately run into the door. (The frog turns into a monster and eats the Swami; poor Swami!)

THE MANUAL OF MONSTERS

While all this was going on, Byron entered alone into a pentagon-shaped room with 5 black doors, one of them having a key hole in the middle. In the center of the room was a mysterious book marked "M.M." Under an invulnerable crystal bowl was a key. Byron opened the book which turned out to be the Monster Manual, and had to face in one-to-one combat a random monster from the book.

The randomly determined monster was the carnivorous ape. Byron pulls out his blue gem, which he believes has 3 charges of lightning bolt, but nothing happens! Byron then turns to his sword of life-stealing (or something like that), and easily slays the carnivorous ape. Byron takes the key and rejoins the party by unlocking the correct door.

NO MORE MONKEYING AROUND

The party expects to face the baboons and Jack Ass Kong again, but this time they are no where to be seen. Although the room was now empty, they could still make out the faint sounds of monkeys laughing and shouting "Losers!" and "Cheaters!" The party presses on to the final leg of their journey, to the Mystic Cup of Gygax, to Alucard's betrayal, and... DEMOGORGON!

THE EBON STAIRS

The players make their final approach to the cup of Gygax down the ebon stairs. Half-way down, tormented spirits in the stairs attack! Chainsaw, whose magic-user is down to his last hp, is carried by Tetramorph's noble yet naive fighting man, and takes a hit to keep Alucard-in-disguise alive!

At the base of the stairs, the party sees themselves being killed in a magical mural (at various points in this adventure, the party had seen murals and prophecies relating to Alucard's story and his lust for vengeance against the party, and how he hoped to gain the cup and thus be chosen by Demogorgon to lead an army of demons to take over the world!).

THE CUP OF GYGAX

The party enters a chamber filled with many cups. While they try to decide which cup is the one belonging to Gygax, Alucard reveals himself and surprise attacks the party! At the same time, someone uses their magic sword's ability of locate object to find and drink from the true cup (enabling him to read the adventure module for a short time and ask the DM one question that must be answered truthfully; it is then the party learns about their arranged meeting with Demogorgon at the end of the adventure).

Note: I thought Alucard should be a lich, and Jimm thought he should be a vampire, so we compromised and made Alucard a vampire lich!

The first thing Alucard did was charm Welleran with a vampire gaze (Welleran had a sword with 6 wishes!). The battle between Alucard and the party became a battle for Welleran and his sword. Poor Welleran was facing charms from both sides, dispel magics, and more! Welleran was bouncing back and forth like a yo-yo and getting beat like a pinata. There were vain attempts to turn Alucard. At one point, Welleran thought he had (barely) made a save vs. Alucard's charm attempts, but being a vampire, he had a -2 to his save, meaning he (just barely) lost again!

Under the charm of Alucard, Welleran used the first of his wishes, to heal himself and Alucard back to full hp. After several rounds of intense rolls for initiatives and saves, Welleran manages to break free from Alucard's charm and quickly wishes he and his group were 1,000 miles away from Alucard.

The group finds themselves in a tavern somewhere in China, with the cup of Gygax in hand! The group cheers, but Jimm and I remind the group that the adventure isn't over yet. There is still the matter of Alucard.

DEMOGORGON

Alucard, having been foiled yet again, turns to gaseous form and heads out through the door marked EXIT. He reappears in the earlier chamber with the 3 demon faced doors, but this time there is no demon lady, it is Demogorgon himself!

Demogorgon is furious with Alucard's failure to retrieve the cup, so Demogorgon stops time, sucks Alucard into his lungs, and vomits him into an iron cup which he then seals with a lid. Thus ends the adventure 15 minutes before midnight.

The adventure was designed to end in a TPK, but all of the players survived with the cup of Gygax in their possession, both DMs were killed, and Alucard ended up the prisoner of Demogorgon. Oh well, win some, lose some.

THE END

JIMM'S KIDS D&D GAME

Jimm had a large turn out, ranging from 7 to 9 kids (some of the kids wandered off and back at random intervals). Tetramorph, Flambeaux, and I contributed a couple of children each, and I think the rest of the kids were related to BadMike and Doug Rhea.

The game started at 10am on a Saturday morning and ran through lunch, wrapping up at 2pm, for which several of us were cursing Jimm behind his back!

My daughter played a dragon named Dark Crimson (yeah, you can see where this is going), and my son played a knight named Sir Pete. Everyone played wizards, knights, and elves, but no dwarves.

The party arrives at the evil wizard's blue mountain lair courtesy of riding on an iceberg powered by swimming penguins. Upon arrival, my daughter gets most of the party to go along with her in slaughtering the helpful penguins so she could eat them. Sigh. She would go on to eat all of the monsters they defeated. Apparently my dragon daughter is going through a growth spurt.

When the party confronted the evil wizard and took down his pet, the wizard charmed my daughter's dragon to help fight the party. My daughter was a little too excited to be turned against the rest of the party. Tetramorph and Flambeaux joked that my daughter is going to be the next chainsaw.

It turns out that poor dice rolling is genetic, as my son rolled poorly the entire game. I don't think he landed a single hit or made a single save until the very end. He grew frustrated, which I understand. At the very end, my son rolled a natural 20, hitting one of the evil icicle men! Sir Pete ended the game with a new magic axe.

All the kids had fun, certainly mine did, and Jimm was great with the kids. Jimm explained that actions have consequences, so the party had to find a new way home since they slew and ate the helpful penguins.

As we were leaving for a late lunch, my son said he was looking forward to playing in the next adventure tomorrow. They definitely want to return next year, although my daughter might be too old. Perhaps I should accompany her to one of chainsaw's Foolsgrave adventures next year, so she can see where her current path leads if she doesn't mend her ways (a D&D version of scared straight)!

What terrific summaries, Steve! Thank so much for writing these up. Moreover, thanks to you and austinjimm for all of the hard work that you two put into making the K&KA Social a great, great event. Super adventure concepts, awesome box-set handout for the players. Over and above the call of duty! Needless to say, I had a blast and, as you know, was only too happy to attempt to wipe out the party.
