Re: NTRPG Con IX (2017)
I'll post a detailed write-up of the games I played in soon, especially the K&KA Social for those who couldn't attend. I'm not sure how it was for the players, but it was easily the high point of the Con for me, and perhaps the most fun I've had in D&D ever. I think I spent half the game with my face hidden behind my DM folder, trying to hide the smirks and laughter!
I'll also post my rules for surviving chainsaw's Foolsgrave dungeon.

Re: NTRPG Con IX (2017)
BACKGROUND
Only a fraction of this year's players were present at last year's K&KA Social, and due to the large and loud nature of the group, some of the subtleties of what happened were probably lost in the chaos.
At the 2016 NTRPGCon, before the K&KA Social, I ran a 1E game Dungeon of Dracula (the players included chainsaw and austinjimm). Chainsaw played Alucard, an anti-cleric bent on taking over Dracula's domain, and during the adventure, started recruiting an undead army, and with his group, was able to slay Dracula.
Oh, did I mention that during the adventure, Alucard willingly took the mark of the beast upon his hand and head?
Chainsaw also played Alucard at the K&KA Social the next night run by EOTB, where no one trusted him. Chainsaw's Alucard developed a feud with the Lawful fighter run by Tetramorph (which is funny considering what would happen at this year's social). Tetramorph was dedicated to removing and destroying the marks of the beast on Alucard, in a noble but flawed effort to redeem Alucard, but fails. Eventually, one of the goals of the party becomes seeing to the demise of Alucard. At the end of EOTB's adventure, Alucard meets an untimely and gruesome end, to the cheers of the rest of the group.
Since Alucard had the mark of the beast, I thought he should come back from the dead and seek revenge against the K&KA players one year later at the 2017 Social. Only this time, he would disguise himself as just another player, when in reality he would be Alucard the lich in disguise, and sabotage the group, revealing himself at the end for the final showdown.
Since Jimm played in both events last year, and since we were both up for running something at this year's K&KA Social, Jimm and I teamed up to create this year's The Mystic Cup of Gygax/Alucard's Revenge adventure, a composite of the two magic mazes we had been working on.
I contacted chainsaw, who was of course all too eager to agree to stabbing the party in the back as the traitorous Alucard. Jimm and I gave chainsaw some information before the game, just enough to help him steer the group into death and carnage and help them go down the wrong paths, to whittle down the party before the big confrontation.

Here's a picture of the module and game box we distributed to the players at the end. If Steve says it's OK, I'll post a PDF of the entire adventure.Steve wrote:Since Jimm played in both events last year, and since we were both up for running something at this year's K&KA Social, Jimm and I teamed up to create this year's The Mystic Cup of Gygax/Alucard's Revenge adventure, a composite of the two magic mazes we had been working on.

Re: NTRPG Con IX (2017)
It was an awesome con this year.
Thanks Grodog & Tacojohn for letting me hawk my modules from the Black Blade booth!
Thanks Steve R. and Chainsaw for making the K&KA social awesome!
I took my camera everywhere, but rarely remembered to take any pictures. Here are the few that I did take.
Chainsaw's Thurs. Foolsgrave game, just before the social.

For some reason everyone in the last picture is looking at Nathan's food.

The registration booth. Doug is hanging out with Chainsaw's good buddy, Frank Mentzer, in the BG.

The Hyperborea booth, manned by Ghul.

Bill Webb with Steve Marsh (and Mrs. Marsh?).

And here are 2 character sheets from the OD&D games I played in. The first is from Steve's "To Hades and Back." The second is from the HMS Apollyon.

Donovan certainly has the poker face for that job! I've only seen him drop his deadpan expression once while refereeing.

Man, sounds like the two of you put together an awesome social. Hats off! Wish I could have been there.

It was a fantastic game, but I will hold my comments until after Steve finishes the after action report...

chainsaw's true form revealed!

After Flambeaux, with his Staff of Archmage with 196 charges, you and your Sword of Mitra were my next targets after Welleran and his Sword of Wishes. Lucky for you punks the gods were on your side... but it can't last forever! I'll be back!Jeff wrote:Thanks for a great Social. Had lots of fun and certainly hoping my PC can come back next year with the Sword of Mitra! ... Alucard will die next time!
