Recently watched Michael Wood's In Search of the Trojan War and a video tour of Greece and Turkey.

Currently watching The Joy of Mathematics and planning to follow that with a video series on the Greco-Persian wars.

Finally got to see The Big Short and Spectre. Loved TBS. Spectre was enjoyable for what it was. I think I'm good on major release movies until Zoolander2 hits video.

I'm catching up on Last Ship finally. Normally, a Navy show would drive me nuts with its inaccuracies, but I really like this one! It's got a good, post-apocalyptic vibe while retaining a good flavor. Plus, it's clearly filmed aboard a real warship, and the Hollyweirdisms are minimal. (Bonus points for depicting Maryland as the epicenter of a Nazi-style freak show of burning people...anyone from Virginia would agree that is the most likely state for such a thing).

One of the best movies in years. I recall rogatny as one of the first advocates. Kudos man!

I love all the shit Quill gets over his superhero name...

"But you might know me by another name... Star Lord."
"Who?"
"Star Lord. Notorious outlaw. You know. C'mon!
<shakes head, shrugs>

Later...

"You gave yourself a code name? Star Prince?
"It's an outlaw name. Star Lord.
"Relax. It's cool you gave yourself a code name. It's not that weird."

Much later...

"It's Star Lord!"
"Finally!"

A policeman knew my name
He said you can go sleep at home tonight
If you can get up and walk away"

Really a fun movie, and I dig that they gave the soundtrack away for free. Love those MP3s!

I love that Peter Cushing did Shock Waves and Star Wars in 1977. 8)

Did Dracula and Frankenstein over the weekend. The B&W 1931 versions. I've seen Frankenstein a bunch, but I think that was only the second time I've seen Dracula. That's a really underrated movie, in my view. A lot of great characters, and the rubber bat is really the only special effect that looks bad to the modern eye. As good as Nosferatu? No, probably not - Nosferatu's camera work, effects, and makeup are all better, and the villain is more menacing and evil. Instead of having a character pointing off screen yelling, "Look! there goes a wolf!" it shows you actual footage of a wolf. But the 1931 Dracula gets bonus points for having a great Van Helsing, a great Renfield, and Lucy rising from the grave and kidnapping/killing children.

I'm still picking through my silent era films (the 1920 John Barrimore version of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde and Fritz Lang's Destiny are next on my cue - I'm quickly coming to the conclusion that Fritz Lang never made a bad movie), but I'm also starting in on my 1930s list. Here are the movies on my 1930s list so far:

1931 –Dracula; Frankenstein; Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde; M
1932 – Freaks; Vampyr; The Mummy; The Old Dark House; White Zombie; Island of Lost Souls; Doctor X; Tarzan the Ape Man; The Most Dangerous Game
1933 – King Kong; The Invisible Man; Mystery of the Wax Museum; Alice in Wonderland
1934 – The Black Cat; Maniac
1935 – The Bride of Frankenstein; The Raven; The Black Room; Werewolf of London; Mark of the Vampire; A Midsummer Night’s Dream; Captain Blood
1936 – Things to Come; Dracula’s Daughter; Flash Gordon
1937 – Snow White and the Seven Dwarves; Lost Horizon
1938 – The Adventures of Robin Hood
1939 – The Wizard of Oz; Son of Frankenstein; The Hound of the Baskervilles; Gunga Din; Gulliver’s Travels; Buck Rogers

If anyone can think of any other 1930s horror, fantasy or sci-fi movies that should be here, let me know.

That was on my silent era list, which is in a different thread and has had some additions since I posted it, so here goes:

1902 – A Trip to the Moon
1915 – Les Vampires
1920 – Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari; Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde; The Golem
1921 – The Phantom Carriage; Destiny
1922 – Nosferatu; Haxan
1923 – The Hunchback of Notre Dame; La Roue
1924 – The Thief of Bagdad; Die Nibelungen; Greed; Aelita
1925 – Phantom of the Opera
1926 – A Page of Madness; The Adventures of Prince Achmed
1927 – Metropolis; The Cat and the Canary; The Lodger; The Unknown
1928 – The Fall of the House of Usher; The Man Who Laughs

Season 2 of Outlander. Not too bad so far, but needs to pick up the pace a bit.
