Aside from wish or alter reality how would you suggest it be done? The DMG says "a combination of spells that duplicate the effect" or that if no evident way to recharge the item was there then players could research it.
Given the relative power of an SoS I permitted the players to seek out their patron (a very high level magic user) and pay for it - he cast a Bigby's Crushing Hand spell on it to do the trick.

Re: Staff of Striking recharging
Upon reading your first paragraph, my immediate thought was essentially what you did: have them pay fat loot to a high(er) level NPC magic-user, and let it happen behind the scenes - letting the players wonder exactly what spell(s) he used.thedungeondelver wrote:Aside from wish or alter reality how would you suggest it be done? Re: Staff of Striking recharging
I've never had PCs that could recharge. Since it's always handled offstage I don't worry about the details. They just leave it with the powerful NPCS, and come back later and pick it up recharged. There will be a fee or service required. I base the fee on the value of the item.
