Effect of light spell and gaze attack
Effect of light spell and gaze attack
Do you think a clerics light spell cast upon the eyes of a monster using a gaze attack would prevent that sort of attack? For instance, would a sea hags death gaze attack be prevented, or a medusa's stone gaze? I had been ruling yes, but now that I think about it, I don't see any reason a monster couldn't gaze in a forward general direction (at least guessing at the location of the attackers). Perhaps a reduction in the chance of success would be a better way to deal with it (ie. +4 to saves)?

Re: Effect of light spell and gaze attack
You would have to rule if the monster's eyes were visible. I think you would have a better argument for Continual Light to thwart the gaze attack, but the Light spell also may be sufficient as well. I'd say that Cont. Light would be akin to the medusa wearing opaque goggles, and Light would be akin to translucent. Does the monster need the full stare, or does even a translucent barrier block the gaze?
If you can't see the eyes, then you're okay.

+4 saves sounds good to me, and it is in line with Saving Throw Modifiers \ DM Stipulations on page 81 of the DMG.
