Dividing XP/Loot - BTB or Some Other Means?
Re: Dividing XP/Loot - BTB or Some Other Means?
We do give occasional points for good play (but nothing players are aware of, and not much, say 50 XPs for thinking outside of the box and saving the group...stuff that's like "damn cool idea!") and points for "completing" the bulk of a dungeon or module (arbitrary, and usually not even a 1/5th of what you'd need to level up). I think both of those are in line with the original design of the game, as long as the players aren't really thinking about it (ie. hitting marks, asking for XPs for doing this or that, yeah that would be lame).

I give out little spot awards, too. Usually no more than 15-25 xp, and usually as a little 'attaboy' for a good idea or something like that.

This. Magic items get sorted out amongst themselves by the players based on class and on who's got what already. Henchmen only record of their share in actual XP (whether for gold or for monsters).Philotomy Jurament wrote:I divide the monster XP evenly.
The division of treasure I leave up to the players, which means the division of the treasure XP is up to the players.

This seems pretty much BtB to me.Ahriman667 wrote:Feeling out how the rest of you dole out XP to your players. No agenda here, just for my edification
For myself I use Excel and...
-total up monster xp
-list ALL treasure (magical and mundane) after determining what they want to sell or keep
-convert all coinage to g.p. equivalent (for the 1gp:1xp ratio)
-total everything
-divide total by number of players
-factor in prime requisite bonus and viola...xp/player
The only real question is that of henchmen and hirelings and followers and animals.
Me, I would divide XP by the total number of figures in the party (eg. 5 PCs, 2 henchmen, 1 hireling, 1 follower, 1 animal = 10 figures).
However, it seems that Gary did not figure hirelings into the equation.
As well, Gary would give magic item XP to the PC who found the item, and that XP was not divided amongst the party.

Ps.
The source for the above is the EN World forums, iirc.
I would provide a link to my site, where I have logged all of this, but that is in a 'grey' copyright area, for now...
In any event, a lot of "BtB" things are in a grey area themselves.
Go with what works, and do not hesitate to 'distort' or 'disregard', if this furthers the play experience for all involved. (Cf. DMG.9)
Re: Dividing XP/Loot - BTB or Some Other Means?
I divide XP among all characters in an adventure, evenly, and split it evenly among their classes. Henchmen get XP, but hirelings do not. Hirelings are a resource, not characters! They don't have classes and, IMO, should be treated like horses or swords for XP purposes. Only if the players had free hirelings who made the adventure easier would I reduce the XP. As long as itssomeone they charmed or paid whose is not a personal henchman I think they are MEANT to be treated that way. Hirelings are pretty much assumed for survivability, though I know many players don't want them and would rather just run a 4-man army. Which is insane. I hire as many goons and mooks as I can.
