DMG Page 62, second column: "When encounters occur, the distance between concerned parties will be 5" to 10" (d6+4) subject to the following modifying factors:..."
Seriously, WTF? Is he using the " symbol to mean feet or is he slipping into miniatures use and really does mean inches?
I'm sure everyone on this forum that reads this is going to have a good laugh at my expense, but I haven't run an AD&D game in decades and this time I want to try to use the actual rules instead of making
everything up because I'm too lazy to read more than a couple of pages out of each book.
PS this isn't a slag against EGG. I own hundreds of game books and I honestly believe the big three are still the best RPG books ever written.
Start distance for surprise encounters.
Re: Start distance for surprise encounters.
Inches = [tens of] Feet indoors or [tens of] Yards Outdoors.
That's standard convention. And, yes, it does come from the "bad old days" of wargaming.
When figures are 1" apart (bases touching on a "standard" 25mm figure) they are in melee.
So long as there is at least that distance, options exist for parlay, flight, magic, and missile combat, as well as tactics like charging.

Thanks. I knew that long ago. I wonder what else is buried somewhere in my brain.
Re: Start distance for surprise encounters.
I thought it was tens of feet or tens of yards usually.

It is, tens of feet or yards. Flambeux knows that too; just a slip of the pen, I am sure!

Yep. Thanks. That's what I get for posting while herding children.Matthew wrote:It is, tens of feet or yards. Flambeux knows that too; just a slip of the pen, I am sure!

It'll come back, mostly in in large, semi-related chunks. Its like riding a bike. In armor. With a gargoyle on your shoulder.Taliesyn wrote:Thanks. I knew that long ago. I wonder what else is buried somewhere in my brain.
