Rules for Throwing Oil?

Post by Merctime »

I've noticed in OSRIC that Clerics receive a weapon proficiency choice for Oil. I am assuming this is throwing it, but cannot find the rules on how to do so. I know this is a small matter for a thread here, but if anyone can point me out to the rules for this in OSRIC I'd be a happy guy. Love the idea to make it a proficiency option too! Thanks folks... Happy gaming. -Merctime

OooooK... I suppose this has been only asked around a thousand times then. Well, could anyone tell me how they handle this part of the game? I just liked the idea of having a proficiency in lobbing oil at my foes hehe. I think I read somewhere one of the posters stated a damage of 3d6 or so? And I'm imagining it's handled like a grenade-like weapon. I don't have any of my old 1e books (more's the pity, but wow can't wait to get the OSRIC book... It looks GREAT)... But I seem to remember something about rolling a d8 for location after a hit roll is made or something... like each number on the d8 represents in which direction the grenade damage travels or something? like 1=just north, 2 = 2 squares north... I'm trying to remember but it's been ages since I have gamed. Really, reading through the OSRIC.pdf and the downloadable adventures from Dragonsfoot has got me remembering alot of things, but I'm still fuzzy in some areas of course. Hope someone will toss me some ideas on how to run this part! Have fun everyone. -Merctime

I think the lack of response has less to do with this topic having been "discussed to death" (I don't recall it actually ever having been discussed around here) than the fact that I don't think any of us has rules that we use to adjudicate the use of flaming oil.

Everyone seems to apply their own common sense. I know I don't use the RAW in 1e, such as they are. I expect most others around here don't, either. 8)

Here's what I use in my OD&D game, which was lifted out of AD&D, if I recall correctly. (I may have lowered the damage from the flaming oil, though.) I don't think I'd use a proficiency slot, I'd just use the class's regular attack roll, figuring everyone can throw a flask, and the "athletic types" are already going to be better at it than the "scholarly types" because of the attack charts and Dex bonus.

EDIT - The AD&D damage for a direct hit is 2-12 the first round and 1-6 hit points the second round. Splash hit does 1-3. Additional details I didn't provide in the link:

The d8 direction of a missed attack is:
1 = long right
2 = right
3 = short right
4 = short (before)
5 = short left
6 = left
7 = long left
8 = long (over)

For distance of a missed throw, use 1d4 ft for "short," 1d8 ft. for "long," and 1d6 ft. if neither short nor long is indicated.

Rang is 3". Beyond 1" is medium (-2 to hit) and beyond 2" is long (-5 to hit).

Thank you both very much! I appreciate it. I'll be copying/pasting this stuff soon.
