The way I handle it is this: if an MU has a toad familiar on him (say in a jar in his back pack or maybe in a leather pouch on his belt) first the MU tries to save. If he succeeds what is on him, including his toad is fine. If he fails then the toad gets a separate chance to save.

If that same toad was on the ground hopping along with his master, then they save separately since he's not on the MU's person.
