Traveller people I know demand absolute obedience to the canon rules and official universe (OTU), and any infractions, slight deviations or creative innovations result in the offender being violently upbraided then permanently shunned.

Seriously. Those are some intense dudes. I love
Classic Traveller, but the people who play it DRIVE ME CRAZY!

Fortunately, more D&Ders I know are much less up-tight about RP than those in other games.
You never played with me, man.
I play only CT, and have done so since 1983... but I have thrown out the ship's computer rules & brought in ones from The Space Gamer magazine (1981), experimented with a completely self-written Psionics system, altered certain rules for ship-building (like developing a parallel, but somewhat different FTL drive), etc... and changed any number of other rules.
My Traveller game is set in an altered version of the 2nd Imperium (Rule of Man) period... the 1st Imperium-Terran Confederation wars ended in a stalemate and prolonged "cold war", not the take-over of the 1st Imperium by the Terrans (Solomani).
So yeah, you never played with me.
Of course, I played 1E AD&D before Traveller, and CT was still a living, growing, changing thing when I got into it, so I'm "not like the others"... and am proud to be so!
