Oh is that what you meant!

I assumed you had the rulebooks 'cause you said 1E was your second choice of games to play.

How does combat work, then?
To quote the inestimably puissant Terry Austin:

Is there a reason you guys are mocking me?

I asked a simple question about a mechanic I've never grasped.

Lighten up, Broccoli man.

Since I have yet to meet someone satisfied with AD&D's psionics, you could always *oh gosh* see about using the one from 2nd Edition, as I assume it works somewhat better since 2E players don't usually have that attitude about it.

I'm already doing that.

I actually want to understand how the Psionics in 1e works.

So far, folks have only told me what's already in the books. I wouldn't ask if I understood what's already readily availible. ;)

My apologies. I guess I missed the fact you had access to the books and thought I was giving some you information you didn't have. I'll see if I can come up with some better examples of actual use that may be of some assistance.

Well, why don't you try reading the books for comprehension, testplay the rules, and learning for yourself... like everyone else did... instead of expecting someone to do the work for you and then copping a shitty attitude about it?

I've used 1e psionics just fine and never had a problem with them. I don't get anyone who does.

Dude...the only attitude is from everyone else. My mood is just fine, I'm only trying to figure it out.

I have read them. I wouldn't ask if I haven't read them. I've been trying to figure those rules out for a long time. There are no clear instructions. I've read and read and read.

OVer and over and over again. Several times. Problem is, there aren't any really clear instructions on how the mechanic works.

There's no attitude, there's just a couple of folks crying like little girls because I asked a question. I'M the one who should lighten up? I'm fine, none of my posts have had any virtiol. I'm actually pretty amused at this point.

You know what I think? I think you guys don't know the answer either, and thats why you can't just answer the question. And grognards just CAN'T appear ignorant on any rule regarding 1e in front of each other. I know, because they used to pull this same social tactic at DF til enough folks called them on it. It would explain the exhiliration behind monosylabic "clever" answers and the inclination toward mockery.

"Poorly", ""not well", or whatever, is not an answer. "Why don't you read the book" is not only an insulting assumption, it's another dodge. I wouldn't ask if I understood the mechanic.

So, why don't you try actually teling me what I'm missing instead of trying to lecture me about an "attitude" I've never "copped" except towards YOU right now.

All I want to know is how the rule works. What do I roll? How do I actually wage combat? What are the actions one goes through? I've read the damn book, if it made sense to me I wouldn't be asking. rogueattorney and piper are the only two that have really been helpful so far.

By th way, Piper, you did try to help me, but I didn't want to abuse your good nature by making you clarify even further. So I left it at that, and was prepared to abandon the thread until the stupid stuff started. Thanks for what you did.

Basically, thanks for the wiki, rogueattorney, thanks for the help Piper, and so on.

This thread is so stupid and divergent from it's original purpose I hope it gets locked.

If two 13 year old boys in Arkansas in the 1980s can figure it out without the benefit of the internet, so can you.

What the hell?

Recap of the thread so far:
Poster #1: How do Psionics work?

Poster #2: Poorly!

Poster #3: <summary/explanation of the rules in the book>

Poster #4: <link to detailed essay explaining the rules in the book>

Poster #1: But how do they work?!

Poster #5: <links to previous discussions of the topic>

Poster #6: Try reading the book

Poster #1: No no no! You guys are just telling me what's in the books. I've already read the books. But I want to know how they work! I think you don't really know either and are afraid you'll lose grognard-face if you admit it!
What is it that you're actually looking for here, BR? The rules in the book are complicated and are strange from the perspective of the rest of the AD&D system, but they do work, and Piper's posts and especially North's link to Rogueattorney's essay on the wiki explain how they work. What parts still aren't clicking for you? Maybe if you had some specific questions about what's confusing you (and a lot less aggressive and confrontational 'tude) we could better help you out.

Or maybe you'd just rather complain...

Read it however you like.

I want a simpler explanation than the instructions I see in the book.

I don't have a grasp on it. I understand the theory behind it all, I want to know how to make it work.

Since that isn't apparentlyu clear enough...

What do I roll and when do I roll it?

Thanks.
