summoning of demons and of devils

Post by Geoffrey »

In the 1977-79 AD&D rulebooks, are there rules or guidelines for summoning demons or devils? There is the cacodemon spell and the gate spell. The MM has a bit of a discussion on devils' talismans and demons' amulets. I can't think of anything else.

Of course, S4 had several demon/devil-summoning spells (reprinted in UA).

I am at work, but didnt the DMG have something on protective circles and such in the magic section? I dont think there were any spells per say but there may have been a procedure. I will have to check when I get home.

The only thing I can find is on p. 42 of the DMG under the spell aeriel servant: "The spell caster should be required to show you what form of protective inscription he or she has used when the spell is cast. The three forms mentioned are: "

which is followed by diagrams of a magic circle, a pentagram, and a thaumaturgic triangle.

There's more detail in EGG's Dragon 56 article on summoning circles/spells than appears in S4, most of which was later not detailed in UA well. It's worth digging up the original text and comparing, especially if you don't own S4.

Thank you very much for that reference! :) Now I just need to somehow get my Dragon disk 1 to work again. :(

Say! That issue has a bear-like creature on page 60 called a shroom!

I stumbled across the following reference on p. 195 of the DMG (Appendix D): 'Cf. THE DRAGON #20, Vol. III, No. 6: "Demonology Made Easy", by Gregory Rihn. This excellent article gives some interesting thoughts on variant creatures of the evil planes!'

Fortunately, I own that issue (bought for a mere $1 in the used section of a game store!). The article itself is on pages 13-15, and it gives a concise set of suggested rules for summoning evil entities of the lower planes (demons, devils, and night hags). I concur with Gary's estimation of the article as "excellent".

While the article's summoning rules are not in the official AD&D rules, the article itself is lauded in the official AD&D rules. That has to count for something! :)

Rihn wrote a few good articles in the early days of TD:
Gregory Rihn in Dragondex wrote: "Demonology Made Easy" in TD 20(13)
"Humanoid Races In Review" in DM 44(16)
"Lycanthropy: The Progress of the Disease" in TD 14(29)
"Self Defense For Dragons" in DM 50(7)
and I've always associated his work with Alexander Von Thorn's "The Politics of Hell" in TD 28(2), due to the demonology connection....

White Dwarf #47 'The Demonist' is an alternative NPC class for demon summoning types. #48 has a bunch of spells for use with the class, many relating to summoning/binding demons and devils.

Very interesting. I'm going to have to get a hold of those. Thanks for the references! :D
