That is a different kettle of fish, in that only powerful strongly aligned creatures emanate evil that can be detected. As written, the protection from evil spell imposes combat penalties on all evilly aligned creatures much like a bless or prayer.

Yes, pro vs X & pro vs X 10'r is an enormously potent effect for it's spell level(s).

Even if the AC & save bonuses are inconsistent (vs a group of mixed alignments say), the power to block summoned/conjured monsters & charm/mental commands is more than enough reason to use it.

It doesn't need to be, an orc (LE) attacking a paladin (pro vs evil 10'r) still needs 2 higher to hit the paladin & if the orc poisoned that paladin, he'd get +2 extra on his saving throw.

The most potent effects are vs "magic" though, and probably shine the most at mid/high levels.

What you guys do as a "house rule" certainly weakens thew spell at lower levels, but it's your call to make (just understand it's NOT what the books say/mean)
