Web

Post by kilted-yaksman »

I was reading through spells last night and my recollection of the 2nd level MU spell Web was very different than the text.

Unless I'm reading it incorrectly (likely) the size of the web is significantly smaller than I thought it was. Can someone walk me through the area of effect?

Inches refers to "game inches" (see "Distance" on pg 39 of the Players Handbook). In the case of spell areas of effect, a game inch is always 10 ft. So the webs must be at least 10 ft. thick; a mass 40 ft. high, 20 ft. wide, and 10 ft. deep may be cast.

Any idea how this "game inches" rather then feet/yards came to be? I assume something brought in from chainmail (perhaps corresponding to a board in inches)? I have to admit, always seemed odd.

Exactly right... it referred to the 1" hex/grid used in wargaming, since D&D was originally sub-titled "Rules for Fantastic Medieval Wargames Campaigns Playable with Paper and Pencil and Miniature Figures".

At least that's what my copies of the original D&D booklets have on their front covers!
