haha what? Magic-user and thief not by the book? Magic-user/thief not by the book? M-U/Thf is absolutely BTB.

G: "Since this is the BTB AD&D section, it's NOT BTB however. Neither MU or Thief, let alone both added to ranger".
As a PC Ranger/MU/Th is not BTB (but not a deal breaker)
As an NPC it is BTB IMO.
I think Dungeon Delver mentioned this would be an NPC monster, so theirs nothing wrong with it.
Sure. The idea is to keep as close to whats allowed as PCs as possible, but the occasional oddball is 1E Kosher (as long as its something not idiotic). I wouldn't think a half-elf monk/illusionist would be possible (thats reeking 3E), but a half-elf ranger, thief, MU sure (only as an NPC). A 20th level elf wizard? Sure. A 20th level half orc fighter, no, probably not.
It just feels right or doesn't.
I suppose its up to the DM where to draw the line on NPCs. Its a matter of trying to get as close as you see it to the 1E paradigm. This is where "getting the game" as Professor TFoster used to put it, really comes into play. Its a bit like walking on the edge of a razor. Go to far over into conservative and it can get stale, too far over in munchkin land and well...your in munchkin land.

Yeah, NPC's can be whatever the DM likes
genghisdon wrote:I'd allow it in an open game (or if I was using the UA, which, without the awful dragon "errata" isn't really clear about what is fair game). I've generally been playing PH only for PC's for the last few years however.I actually prefer adding stuff like the bandit class instead.
I'd also say PC's can be whatever the DM feels like allowing. It depends on the campaign IMHO.
Many years ago, I DMed a half elf ranger/MU my friend Bill played. Never used ranger/MU/thief though. I did once DM a human dual class ranger turned thief. My own preferences on this sort of thing tend to change over time. Currently, I'm pretty sick of the same old elves, dwarves, etc, so I think my next campaigns are going to be pretty different than default OR anything goes AD&D.

Sounds a bit like the Bandit from Dragon #63---may be worth checking out if that's the flavor you're looking for.
Hmmm...yeah, haven't looked at the Bandit in a few years, will revisit, thanks Grodog, will get back to you on that one.
