Mulit-class PC taking a new class btb

Post by AxeMental »

Say you have a multi-class (2 classes) elf or half-elf PC thats maxed out in both of his classes. The player's like "now WTF am I supposed to do"? He asks the DM if he can start as a new class at first level while keeping his other two classes active (say he wants to become a thief in addition to his other two maxed out classes) how would you handle it (is this even permissible btb?). I thought this was mentioned someplace years ago, but not seeing it now. Is there a thread on this floating around?

A few questions:

1. would new hit points (in the case of thief d6) be added or divided (by 3)? I would think just add them on.

2. How much time would be required to get the pre-first level training down to start as a 1st level thief or MU or Cl etc.

3. Would you require some exceptional stats related to the new class to do this (the way its done with dual classing...or whatever you call it when a human takes two classes).

Thanks in advance.

BtB, it's not allowed. So you could make up what ever requirements you wanted if you want to allow it.

Won't answer all your questions, but should address a few of them.

I think over again my small adventures. My fears, those small ones that seemed so big, for all the vital things I had to get and to reach, and yet, there is only one great thing, the only thing, to live to see the great day that dawns, and the light that fills the world. - Old Inuit Song

“Superstitions are religious forms surviving the loss of ideas. Some truth no longer known or a truth which has changed its aspect is the origin and explanation of all. The name from the Latin, superstes, signfies that which survives, they are the dead remnants of old knowledge or opinion” - Eliphas Levi (138 The History of Magic).

“Let no one wake a man brusquely for it is a matter difficult of cure if the soul find not its way back to him”, the Upanishads of ancient India ( 58 Our Oriental Heritage, Durant).

"Life is intrinsically, well, boring and dangerous at the same time. At any given moment the floor may open up. Of course, it almost never does; that's what makes it so boring" – Edward Gorey.

"The bright day is done and we are for the dark" - Shakespeare

"No lamp burns till morning" - Persian proverb.

“The living close the eyes of the dead, but it is the dead that open the eyes of the living”— Old Slavic saying.

He prayeth well who loveth well
Both man and bird and beast.
He prayeth best who loveth best,
All things both great and small:
For the dear God, who loveth us,
He made and loveth all' - Samuel Taylor Coleridge (VII Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner).

As a DM, I will usually look for some in game reason to allow characters to try out thier non BtB ideas, as long as they're not too out there or munchkiny. In this case it would depend on what they already were, and what they wanted to add.
But even before that, in my campaign, level limits, just like ability scores, are natural limits, and just like natural ability score limits, they can be surpassed with in game justification. Level limis will slow down progression once the max has been reached, but usually not halt it.
