A Player Proposed Spell

Post by Solinor »

Improved Sleep (Enchantment/Charm) (Level 2)
Range: 30 yards + 10/level
Duration: 1 turn/level
Casting Time: 2
Area of Effect: Special
Saving Throw: None

This spell is similar to the 1st level spell Sleep. It can affect creatures of up to 6+4 HD, and affects a total of 4d4 Hit dice or levels. It is otherwise identical to the 1st level spell Sleep.

Opinions please?
If encounters were balanced, half the party would die every fight.

I think I would put it with the other mid-level nuke spells of Fireball and Lightning Bolt at third level.

I'd go even further up the ladder to 4th-level spell. It's potentially deadlier than the ball and the bolt.

I concur – looks fine, but should be a 3rd or 4th level spell.

Thanks guys, I tend to agree with it being higher level.

Especially because no-save sleep amounts to instant death in most cases.

Hmmm, 5 to 6+4 HD creatures include: basilisks, cockatrices, displacer beasts, small black and brass dragons, average white dragons, 5 or 6 headed hydras, leucrottas, lions, subterranean lizards, all lycanthropes except werebears, manticores, medusas, minotaurs, orchre jellies, owlbears, rust monsters, satyrs, & giant scorpions. All of these monsters are level 4-6 according to the DMG.

I'd say that this spell would severly reduce the challenge these monsters would normally pose to a group of 3rd or 4th level characters. I'd make it at least a 3rd level spell and/or allow a saving throw.
