"Murder Hobos" is a dumb phrase. Funny the first time you read it, but basically amounts to a dismissive and ridiculous description of the D&D adventurer. In short, I feel your nerd rage, but there is not much point trying to get people not to use it.

JDJarvis wrote:The identifier "murder hobo" does a very good job of describing the characters played in my regular Tuesday night game. Spending too much time developing a town or city is silly for me as they are eventually going to set a tavern/Inn/palace/merhcants guild/whole quarter of town on fire and run away. Their primary pastime seems to be traveling around killing people and looting if they don't runaway before they get the loot.
I dropped out of the Friday night 1e game we were playing for that very reason. A new player joined the group and every character he created was played like a Chaotic Evil half-orc assassin. Fire and murder (incapacitate, preferably with magic, and slit throats) were his solution for absolutely everything, and he laughed at attempts to do anything else. It got very old very quick and I found better things to do with my Friday nights (for now). But I do miss the game. :(

Yes, it is dismissive, and very much in the "look I'm stereotyping the way you play in a very derisive `oh look how clever I am, where is my PBR and bacon infused latte'?` " kind of way.

On the other hand, there is precedent.

(and hell yeah, I just made up "PBR and bacon infused latte'", so what?)

The phrase is used casually to refer to the default D&D game play on some forums. Lunatics who go around in dungeons, kill orc babies and loot for fun. Murder Hobos. I've seen it on RPGnet and Something Awful. Not as a joke.

Speaking of annoying labels.

I find the term, and its implications, disturbing. I'm just too lazy to NerdRage about it.

I deal with anti-social assholes all day at work. I won't waste my time at a game table with them. If a group of players aren't interested in my kind of D&D, I'll go find another group of players.

Life's too short to waste time on shitheads.

When its used in a non-humorus way its generally tied in with the notion of questioning the "morality" of killing things like Orcs and Kobolds. Its basically a sort of passive aggresive way of saying "anyone who plays D&D in its traditionally accepted way must be some sort of psychotic racist murderer."

I too wouldn't spend much time at all with a group of players that went around burning down villages and killing innocent people. But monsters are mostly fair game afaic, although with intelligent beings theres always the option of talking it out... :)

Except he's more of a hero than a murderer, no? He's liberating these innocent people from the tyrants running the town.

I think the term is hilarious, and occasionally accurate. Embrace it!
