Bunch of dudes with shit eating grins playing D&D underwater...or something like that.
I went to college with the members of Bitch Magnet, sort of a sister band of Slint. Spiderland was, and still is, one of my favorite albums. That whole sludge sound is just permanently embedded in my brain as the sound of being at Oberlin in 1990 (not to mention being in Taipei in 1991 with way more hashish than was probably wise). A buddy and I were selling the stuff. Our apartment had a stereo, a sofa, a pool table and a closet full of kilos of hash. Spiderland was almost always playing - and rarely, Exile on Main St. (another great album cover).

Legend is, they're his wife's. Ditto the kimono dress thing Ozzy's wearing.

The story is the band was posing for what they thought was the mock up for the album cover. They didn't want to do it and took the piss out of it (as I believe the English might say) by wearing some bizarre clothing. Depending on the version of the story, the photographer who was annoyed by their attitude or their manager or record company who they were in litigation with, used the shitty mockup to get revenge on the band. Also possible that they were never sober enough to do the real shoot, so they had to use the mock up.
Great story! If the semi authorized biography of Ozzy I once read is anything to go by I'd put my money on the last reason!

Not just a bitchin' album cover, but one of the very best sonic mindblasts in the cosmos. 8)
