I think if I can get 10 or so, I should be fine for now. I don't see a scenario right now were I'd run more than 20 figures for orcs.

Another way to look at it without worrying about total manpower available is to design from the top down, taking chiefly into account the influence of the leader type orcs and goblins (or whoever is in actual fact leading them).

Oh, that's a good call! I have a rough idea, this is all stuff that my players haven't had to worry about, but now I find myself having to understand how these things will work in my campaign.

I don't see that in my Chainmail PDF. Is there some sort of play-aid that has things like this summarized?

No worries. Just about my favourite post on Greyhawk Grognard.

Keep us posted on what you end up with!

Good luck!

Not that I know of. The rules for close order and open order have to be inferred from the zone of control rules on p. 16 and the note on the table of p. 40 regarding Landsknechtes. So, for example:

Line Formation

Close Order (1")

Close Order (½")

Close Order (0")

Square Formation

@Matthew - thanks! I've got a post up on my blog with my proposed roster for Enonian (human) troops and tomorrow's post will be the Goblyns of the Dark Woods. I've just sent out an email to my campaign list seeing who wants to recreate the last Goblyn raid on Enonia about 11 years previous to where the campaign is now. It'll be a nice test/learning exercise to do Chainmail BtB and see how it goes.

I would have missed that bit about the open/closed order, thanks!

No worries. I think it works a bit better when measuring from the centre of the miniature, but Chain Mail seems pretty specific; makes it hard to line up light foot in front of heavy foot like this:
