Cool report, Chris!
LOL! But I didn't really go to OwlCon. I went to Houston to meet up with some Alehouse regulars and game. It just happened to be during OwlCon.

The Session 4 summary is going to take a while, but I'll try to get it up tomorrow.

Flambeaux wrote:My first gaming convention. I would explain but there is too much, so I will sum up.

Met awesome people, including people I had never dreamed I would meet. Gamed for 25 hours over two and a half days. Died in three of the four games in which I played.

Had more fun than should ever be allowed.

The details, if you want to read them, will follow.

No details of the actual encounters will be included at the request of the DMs, some of whom are preparing their works for publication. Suffice to say that every session challenged me as a player and inspired me as a Dungeon Master.
Hmm, when someone dies 3 out of 4 games, is it just bad luck or is the player responsible in some way....????? :D
It was great meeting Flambeaux at the con and since he was one of the last to leave we spent a lot of time talking about the hobby, after the con was over we had a great dinner with a few of the Acaeum guys and TacoJohn Hershberger. Great fun!

Thanks for coming and hope to see you next year....and hopefully many more of you..

They were home-made ones, Phillip, printed in color, with a strong Celtic flavor. Tim's planning to publish them later in the year, IIRC.

Tim had also put graphics/pictures of each PC's weapons on the sheets (I think he was pleased to have them noticed -- I picked my "war club" as the weapon in my hand based on how cool it looked in the picture), and each class had a different "header graphic" as well. He'd clearly put some time and effort into them.

Well, in one case, it was my choice. I ate what I expected (as a player) to be illusory or poisoned food. It was, I was told after the fact, a 50% chance either way.

One was the DM making a point: in the scenario a random player must save vs death every 12 hours of in-game time. He wanted us to realize that for the properly prepared high level party death is a speed bump. So that was both delightful and instructive in its own way.

The first death was part of a TPK due to really bad saving throws and, I hope, missed clues.

But it was plenty fun, regardless. Despite my relative youth and inexperience, I've absorbed enough of the Old School spirit to understand that character mortality is high and that's part of the fun.

I'll definitely be back next year, and I'll look at running something since I do love being the Dungeon Master.

He is planning to release the characters, not the sheets, this year as I understand him. He wants to put out a book of NPCs since he believes the loss of the NPC as a viable component of game play has reduced the fun for both the DM and the players.

Beautiful sheets with amusing and detailed bios that a DM can either use as pre-gens for a game session or drop in as NPCs.

Frank also disbursed some goodies that, someday, may see publication.

Flambeaux wrote:I should note that I had a devil of a time deciding whether or not I wanted to play in grodog's game or tacojohn's game. I figured, since he's the expert on all things Greyhawk, that Allan was, shall we say very mature and, err...given the last year, not long for this world. So, with that in mind, fearful that the legendary grodog would pop his clogs in the next 12 months, I opted to play in his Escape from Level 14 of Castle Grohawk rather than the Wilderlands-based game that tacojohn was running.

Well, as most of you know, Allan is not anywhere near old enough to pop his clogs in the next 30 years. And he ran a very enjoyable game that involved very little combat but lots of curious puzzles. No treasure of note was hauled, IIRC, but we did get out alive. This was the only game I played in where I didn't die.
Hilarous! :D :D I read this earlier Chris, and forgot to comment on it. When I met ENWorld's PirateCat in Boston while out there for work a few years ago, he had a similar assumption---that I should be older than Rob, on my last legs, and hobbling along with the weight of The Machine of Lum the Mad on my shoulders. Turns out I was younger than he was ;)

I posted pics to my Facebook profile @ http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=1 ... =792814831 and will get them sent to Doug and Mike to post on the new site (now live; same URL) when they're ready for them.

Are these of the game? If so, any chance of them being posted other than facebook? :?

TRP: they are mostly shots of folks at the tables playing, yes, but not of my session specifically. I'm sure they'll be posted to the forums for North TX RPG Con too, and when they are I'll repost. I may also post them to our Shutterfly account, too.

edit: folks have posted other pics in the Acaeum thread @ http://www.acaeum.com/forum/viewtopic.p ... &start=560 too

I like the shirts with the names on the back. Jason Braun asked me to go but I had a prior commitment in Ohio last weekend...sucks.

Don't take this the wrong way, guys, but everyone in the pictures is overweight. Some more than others, but you guys need to work on your health! Start eating better and working out so you can enjoy playing D&D for years to come and produce new products to keep me entertained.
