STAR TREK **MAJOR SPOILERS**

Both would be good movies, but using Kirk and Spock probably added a what? 50 million profit, more (if you were the investor taking the mega risk, what would you prefer)? The advantage of using these guys is most know them or of them, don't need to develop character (just have to convince people they fit).

The movie is extremely well done and actually captured the feel of the original ST series. No political BS from some bald Frenchman here.
I see Stormcrow's point, but perhaps the way to look at it is the obvious new time stream versus the still activbe old time stream.
When Spock went back in time did everyone and everything he left behind suddenly disappear? Based on past Star Trek epiosdes from the original series the answer seems to be NO.
This ingenious re-boot allows the old fans to enjoy this new take without destroying a beloved "old" series universe. And even better, there is no F-ing Next Generation in the new time stream.

Sigh. I suppose I should have added "In my opinion." Did I post my message at Enworld by mistake? I'm glad you guys liked the movie. I didn't. I hated it. 4e kinda hate. I should not have to add an IMO header to my posts regarding subjective musings.
And yeah, it was hyperbole. I suppose Adam Sandler could have wrecked it as well.

Oh yes it could have... Will Ferrell could have played Uhura.JRR wrote:As it stands, the only way that abomination of a movie could be worse is if it starred Wil Ferell as Kirk.

Saw it tonight with the wife. We thought it was lame. All special-effects action. None of the heart of the original. McCoy was lost in the crowd of half-baked characters. The ship was too large (you could never see the entire bridge, for example) so it was impossible to feel like you were there with them as part of the crew, which was a lot of the fun of the original. The feel was cleanly opposite of the “the adults are in charge” feel of the old Kirk and Spock and McCoy and Scotty, and everything happened by coincidence instead of by naval discipline. Spock was moody/angsty/emo the whole movie, so there was no dramatic payoff when his emotional dam completely burst, or when Sarek talked about love, etc.
I dunno, maybe sequels will be okay since they won’t be under such pressure to deliver a no-stops “epic” spectacle, if it’s part of a series.

(shrug) It was very obvious your post was merely your opinion. I was expressing mine in return. I guess I could have phrased it all PC and everything, but I didn't. I can say with some assurance I will not the next time, either.JRR wrote:Sigh. I suppose I should have added "In my opinion." Did I post my message at Enworld by mistake? I'm cool with people liking or hating it obviously.
I'm also cool with people who just hate remakes, reboots, reinvigorations, whatever, who just want to let things be as they were and not mess with them any more.
What I guess I don't agree with is that, given that this film is a reboot, it's somehow violated the integrity of the characters/canon. The alternate timestream idea seems to neatly dispense with that. It can't violate any of that stuff because it doesn't relate to it. The only thing that this film added to OST canon is that at a certain point in time Romulus got destroyed and a very, very old Spock got sent to another universe. That's it.

Didn't you already mention that? And didn't I already explain that that's not the point?Calithena wrote:What I guess I don't agree with is that, given that this film is a reboot, it's somehow violated the integrity of the characters/canon.
