The animation was borderline awful (looks simple but fair as stills), the stories were often good , the voices were right on the mark. It also introduced lot's of cool stuff like Caitans, Edoans & Kzinti (straight from Larry Niven's own typewriter)/

The voices had better been right on the mark, they were the original cast.
I read an interview with Shatner many years ago; in it he mentioned that he recorded his part in a men's room between takes on another project.

I also read somewhere that Shatner really went to bat for his former crew-mates, insisting the original actors be hired to voice their own parts.

It's true. Uhura and Sulu were going to be voiced by Jimmy Doohan and Majel Barrett (both tight with Roddenberry for different reasons). Both Shatner and Nimoy refused to work on the project if the entire cast was not used. Only Chekov didn't make it... for reasons I'm not aware of.

William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, and Majel Barrett are/were all white people.
Nichelle Nichols and George Takei showed Star Trek's commitment to diversity.
Walter Koenig wasn't necessary in that regard. Besides, Star Trek Season 1 was fine without him, so he wasn't so much a fixture.

Personally, I tend to think it was more about the fact that Nichols and Takei suck as actors. But that's me.

Yup, you'd have figured I would have read that but I always figured it was just good interpretations of the actors. They weren't all exactly superstars in those days however so I an see how they were able to hunt them down for recording between other projects.

"Rodenberry was the hack who created the Star Trek television show way back in the 40's or something". Hahahaha God I love The Onion.

Well... all I have to say about the new so-called Trek movie I said in the other "new Trek movie thread"... more heresy.
It seems to be a parody/mockery of TOS...
